Chapter 14

The Farm

I saw Lia come running out of the house; she reminded me of an old grandma running out to see her grandchildren. She would kick my butt if she heard me call her grandma; she was only five years older than me. David came walking out from the barn with another guy, slapping the dirt and dust away from his jeans, and he saw me and waved.

Lia got to me first. “Oh my God, you made it, Ky!” She was so happy, she was crying and wiping away tears, and she threw her arms around me and hugged me.

“I’m so glad to see you.” David slapped my shoulder, then when Lia let go, he pulled me in for a big hug. “So good to see you, brother.” We both teared up.

“David, you’re making me lose my man card,” I complained, wiping the tears away.

I introduced David and Lia to the whole group, and it was like everyone knew each other already. Then David introduced us to one of his live-in farmhands, Derek Anders, who tipped his straw cowboy hat.

“Howdy all, I got to get back to the livestock, but if you’re out at the fire tonight, we’ll toast with a beer and a shot of fireball! See you all later.”

He headed toward the big barn. “He seems like a likable guy,” I said to David.

“He’s a good worker. His whole family was lost to the virus, and he lost his house when the power kicked, a fire from a candle, so he’s been with us since.”

“Who was that on the tractor when we were pulling in?”

“South field, that was Ronnie, he’s a character, a throwback to the ‘80s, into the heavy metal big time. Great worker, he came north several years ago from Florida after he lost his wife in an accident.”

“So where is the little one?” I asked, looking around. I didn’t see Chye.

“She’ll be coming along shortly. She’s out fishing in the bay with someone, hoping to get some steelies or lakers or whitefish, maybe some walleye or perch to cook tonight. And this beautiful little lady must be my niece,” he said, bending down to Nikki. He rubbed her head. “Your pop there told me you were just a little bitty thing, but I don’t know what he’s talking about, I see a beautiful young lady in front of me.”

She giggled and he tickled her, making her laugh. Lia went to one knee and reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a silver charm on a leather string. “Nikki, I’m Lia. I hope we can be so close, and I made this for you.”

It was a silver leaf, hand pounded, with a green stone in the center.

“It’s, wow, it’s beautiful!” Nikki said. “It’s really for me?”

“It is, honey. I make jewelry and other things like that. It’s my hobby, and I’m teaching Chye how to make them. I’ll teach you too, if you want to learn.”

“That would be so neat!” She threw her arms around Lia’s neck and hugged her.
