Your hike begins through the shady picnic area across from the Bear Gulch Nature Center and begins the sinewy climb up the High Peaks Trail at the Moses Spring trailhead. In the winter and early spring, Bear Gulch Creek gurgles on the right through the picnic area and partway up High Peaks Trail. Bear right at the Moses Spring Trail junction, and soon you trade the leafy gulch and cool, velvety, moss-covered boulders for manzanita shrubs as the trail traces the base of the towering rock spires past climber access trails. Keep an eye out for climbers dangling from ropes like marionettes or sitting on top of precipitous cliffs.
