Chapter 9

Evina stood in front of the fire, staring at the dancing flames. She was only a little nervous about her wedding night, but not about Ewan. He was a wonderful man and she trusted him with her life. There was no doubt that after tonight, her life would forever be changed. She’d call Cowen Manor home for remainder of her days. It would be a sad time when she left her village, but with every new day, she’d get used to her new life.

Once she arrived in her room, she thought through what she’d seen. It was impossible that Ceana would show up with all the highlander warriors in the room, or was it? The woman had proved time and time again that she was unaffected by the fierce warriors, even unafraid at times of the consequences of her actions. But why would she stand by to watch the union of the man she loved and the woman she despised? That was a question she’d ponder, but for now, she needed to think about her new husband. He’d be arriving any minute, Whig made tingles run down into her stomach which fluttered like thousands of butterflies.

The light knock at the door brought about a new thrill. She walked to the door and opened it, letting Ewan step inside. When he shut the door behind him, he pushed the lock in place, effectively starting their wedding night. For a long moment, they stood in the middle of the room, staring at one another. Evina was unsure about what happened next, which made her shiver slightly.

Ewan took a step closer, testing her nerves as he did. Then in another step they were standing toe to toe. Ewan reached out to lightly caress her cheek, as she leaned her head into his touch. He had to pace himself, and try not to take things too quickly. He wanted her to enjoy the night.

“You’re shivering?” Ewan said as he felt the tremors through his fingertips. He turned and placed another piece of wood in the fireplace beside them. “There, that should help.”

Evina smiled at her husband’s words. “It’s not all from the cold.” Her words were barely audible as she spoke.

Ewan let out a sigh, “Don’t be afraid of me. You know I’ll never harm you.” He pulled her against his chest, pushing his fingers into her long hair, realizing she’d taken the pins out and let it down. “We will take it slow and get to know one another.”

“Husband, I’m not afraid of you in the least, it’s just... well...” Then she pulled her head back to look up into his eyes, seeing the flames dancing in their reflection.

“Aye, as I said, we’ll take our time. We have a lifetime to love one another.” He pulled back, letting his hands fall to his side, “But first let me get my weapons off.”

Evina watched with amazement as he pulled the scabbard over his head, placing his sword on the table by the door. Then he knelt to pull two daggers from each tall boot, but he wasn’t finished yet.
