Chapter Sixteen
Vast sections of the rock temple were in full collapse when I barely raced out of the dark and onto the temple steps, covered in ancient dust, choking, coughing, and trying to establish security and recognize threats as the first in the team into a new location weâd fallen back into.
Spoiler⦠we got pushed by this mummy general right into a blocker force.
I brought the M4 up and started engaging the shambling spindly-stick-body dead already struggling up from the sands and the river.
For me, and this is a side note, these dead really bothered me. Wasnât like some of the âclassicâ zombies or ghouls weâd faced before. These were like famine victims, their skin taut and brown. Their features misshapen by abuse and mistreatment in malnutrition before they were buried alive as a bonus feature to the worthy Saurian being entombed for the afterlife.
Their eyes were large but lifeless, and by what light there was available they looked to me more like aliens than human wretches. Saurian slaves, really.
They were small and gaunt. Their bodies little more than sticks wrapped in coarse rags that had probably once been the only clothing theyâd ever owned as they toiled at this pyramid, that obelisk, or yet another grand monument to death eternal and the Saur.
It was clear their intentions were to harm us. So⦠I started blasting.
As they say.
Chief Rapp barely cleared the entrance, and then the whole temple collapsed beyond the darkness of the gaping open mouth of an entrance. I got hit from behind with a shock wave of hot dead air that smelled overripe with the sweet scent of the dead and the long-buried ages of papyrus-scrolled spells, eucalyptus balms, and burial spices.
I pivoted for half a second just to see if the other members of my team had made it, but there was literally no time to lose if I was gonna establish some kind of perimeter by gunfire for us to gather, organize, and move for the exfil.
Listen to me sounding Ranger and all.
Anyway⦠coffee would have been nice, but I was busy popping caps and smoking spindly dead slaves as fast as I could aim and pull the trigger.
Sometimes the fast-moving five-five-six got me a two-fer and blew apart a couple of the slave zombie skulls, but for the most part I had to put in the work of marksmanship, breath, timing, and urgency matching that of a ticking clock on a bomb about to detonate.
In that pivot back to check on the rest of the team, Chief Rapp and the captain, drilling two dead things that looked like skeletal corpses dipped in barbecue sauce and left to stretch in the sun, I saw the Green Beret reach into a cascade of dusty debris and falling rock of the façade of the burial temple, and watched as the operator yanked the stumbling were-tiger Ranger captain out from under certain death by crushing ancient temple.
It was literally all hands involved in the business of our group survival.
