Chapter 6

The Home of Mike Tresham

Langley, Virginia

February 23, 1981

Mike Tresham stopped at his front door and turned to Bill Casey. He looked past the Director to the agent sitting in a car by the curb.

“Bill, with everything that’s going on right now do you really think this is the best use of our manpower? Leaving an agent here to babysit me?”

“My manpower,” Casey said, correcting his former lieutenant. “You’re not part of the equation anymore.”

“Fine, fine, but still.”

“This isn’t over, Mike. On many fronts. Even if what you say is true and a big chunk of Capitol Hill goes down in flames over this, you’re not just going to walk away scot free.”

“I understand that.”

“Do you know how bad you made me look today?” Casey asked. He had a pained look in his eyes.

“Is that what you’re worried about Bill? How you look?”

“See, Mike. That’s what you’ve never understood. How to play the long game. Yes, we’re dealing with a serious threat, but if we all go down over it who will deal with the next one? And the next one?”

“You’re right, Bill. I am a lot more concerned about the current threat than I am my career.”

“Fuck you.”

“It’ll work itself out,” Tresham said as he inserted his key in the lock and opened the door. “It always does. Hell, Jack should be in Leavenworth right now, not out there chasing down the real threat while we all take part in the biggest circle jerk in history.”
