Chapter Four
Bees busily hummed amid the flowering shrubs that bordered one side of the stables. Davie waited while Tullie took her time looking for a spot to piss. The day promised to be lovely, and Davie did his best not to resent that it was his turn to muck out stalls. Somebody had to do it, and when the horses all had fresh bedding it was a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. It just made for a long, sweaty day.
He put his hands on his hips and sighed. One tiny thought about sweating and his mind had gotten the bit between its teeth and run off with him, right back to the field where Morgan had done bloody magical things with his mouth.
Thereâd been a full day since then, but it still felt as if itâd happened seconds ago. Davie had no worry that Morgan had gotten what he needed and then flitted off to never speak to Davie again. Things had just been busy with his family. Yesterday had involved quite the parade out to the stablesâeven Noah with his painful limp had come alongâand all the Tenbey men had argued over what mares Morgan would be taking north. It had ended up being a heated conversation.
Also heated had been the longing looks Morgan had cast his way when the rest of his family had been busy. Those few seconds of eye contact had kept Davie tossing and turning half the night. His cock had been up into the wee hours as well, not satisfied with his hand.
âThing is as spoiled as you are,â he grumbled at Tullie as she methodically sniffed the short grass. âFind a spot and piddle. I havenât got all day.â
âExcuse me,â said a deep voice from behind Davie. âI didnât quite hear that.â
Davieâs heart leaped into his throat. âMy lord,â he said, spinning on his heel to face Viscount Ramsbury. After bowing, Davie pulled his shoulders back and lifted his chin. Ramsbury couldnât know what Davie had been up to with Morgan, could he? âI was nattering at the dog is all, my lord.â
Ramsbury nodded sagely, even though his nose wrinkled up at the sight of Tullie as if the little terrier smelledâwhich she did not. Davie kept her bathed.
The longer Ramsbury stood there, the more Davie had to force down the urge to run. Was the man working himself up to take Davie to task for daring to consort with his son? His lungs burned as he hardly dared to breathe. He was going to have to flee again, this time for his life under threat of the gallows. No nob would blame his own flesh and blood when there was a convenient member of the lower classes to pin the guilt on.
The memories of Morgan would turn bittersweet as Davie struggled to start over yet again.
His foot tapped, nervous energy burning through him. He edged a few steps away from the viscount in case the man turned violent. Ramsbury had never seemed to
