Teachers can assess how effective their stories are by comparing how well students remember content that they learned with the help of a story with content they learned without a story.

• When stories are used within constructivist instruction, they should be told in an open-ended way that allows each student to draw his or her own conclusions.

• When stories are told within intensive-explicit instruction, the teacher should explicitly connect the elements of the stories to the content being learned.

• Stories can be used to (a) anchor new knowledge, (b) build prior knowledge, (c) prompt thinking and dialogue, (d) generate interest, (e) inspire hope, (f) offer new perspectives, (g) describe epiphanies, and (h) build community.

• Teachers can use a story line to develop a library of stories to use in their lessons. They should consult the story line when they plan instruction.

• Common story structures include escalation, hero-conflict-resolution, building and upsetting expectations, self-revelation, and epiphanies.

• Effective stories are not lame; in addition, they are concise, vivid, emotional, surprising, and humble.

• Well-told stories are planned ahead of time, spontaneous, conversational, simple, short, and appropriately paced.
