In the Evening, the Sea

for Steve

The new day tasted of last night’s memories, of brine-tainted ghosts and dark things sinking beneath currents of revulsion. The sun had just risen, although shadows lingered in the room. A breeze played with the curtains, salt and copper heavy on the dank air. Sitting up, I stared blankly at the puddles beginning to shrink on the floor. A crab scuttled beneath the curtains and out of the bunker as a starfish flexed on the blanching concrete.

Unused to the air, a wave of dizziness rocked me as I staggered to the curtains. Wet clothes moved like a cold, ill-fitting second skin. Dawn-light drenched the weathered rocks forming the far side of the cove, picking out the natural archway that formed the entrance to the moon-shaped bay. Just beyond its jagged arc, the sea stirred under the climbing sun.

Only the sun kept it at bay. Come the night—

I had to leave today.
