CHAPTER 56

Todd pushed open the door to the Value TSP and stepped inside. There she was, Lake and Hanan both panting all over her. He bit back a curse. He’d had plans of finding her and making himself out to be the hero. Instead, that honor apparently went to that moron Lake.

Lake looked at him. “Well, look what the crows dragged in.”

Dillon put a hand on Lake’s arm. She looked horrible. Sunburned and rough. But she was safe and in one relative piece. And once more the queen of the entire damned room. “Cam, behave.”

Damn it.

Todd motioned to Agent Strette. “We were sent to assist in the search for two missing PAVAD agents.”

“Well, pal, we’re not missing any longer.” Lake grinned. He deliberately put a hand on Dillon’s back. Shifted closer to her. Almost like a lover. Exactly like a lover. That had to be it. How many of the men in the room had she screwed?

Yes, they were screwing. What kind of trouble had they gotten in to in the few days since that damned conference? “So Strette and I aren’t needed, I see.”

“Nope. Don’t let the door—”

“Cam! Stop,” Dillon said. “Barnes, as you can see, we are fine. We appreciate your office’s offer of assistance. But we’re fine. And we have PAVAD with us.”

“Hey Barnesy,” someone else said. “Long time, no see. How’s the brain?”

Ezra Hahn, sharpshooter extraordinaire. Right there beside Agent Toliver, looking all smug and sanctimonious. What did he honestly bring to PAVAD other than the ability to kill from a great distance, anyway?

Todd fought a sneer.

Strette looked at him and shook his head, wordlessly conveying that he shouldn’t take the bait. Strette was probably the only friend he had at his current field office, and he knew it.

Guy had once worked PAVAD but been transferred out without a by-your-leave. Hadn’t been good enough, apparently. Strette was a damned fine agent.

Strette had a bit of resentment for the great PAVAD, too.

“Glad to see... you’re alive, Dillon. Lake. We’ll be heading out, back to our team. Where we belong.” The words burned Todd’s tongue. He did what he had to do.
