CHAPTER 8

HUSBAND

The morning after my bath, Sebastian is gone when I open my eyes again.

I call his name, only to get an echo of my own voice in answer. Squinting in the faint orange light of the torches he’s left burning for me, I search for his silhouette and find nothing. He’s definitely missing from this part of the cave.

Huh. I wonder why.

If it isn’t for this feeling of certainty I have, I’d think that he left me. It might not be the same sensation as Aria described—she made it seem like carrying the soul of Ariadne around with her was like having a conscience you can actually hear—but I know it deep in my gut. This is the man for me. My soulmate. There’s a tie between us that has lasted for centuries. Though we’ve only met again a handful of days ago, I get the vibe that Sebastian’s in it for life.

That doesn’t mean that I have to spend every waking minute with the guy. I like him, and getting to know a bit more about him yesterday was awesome, but I’ve never been one of those girls who needs to be constantly admired, forever adored. I got enough of that when I was a teen in Portland. I was over it long before I came to the Other. For me, happiness was solitude in my cottage home and my hands busy creating something that’s both beautiful and useful.

Kind of like me.

And, sure, I might be missing my cozy cottage a little. It was a shame to leave all of my pottery supplies behind, and I can’t help but wonder what Aria’s doing right now. I try not to worry about her too much. She might’ve been my only friend in Delphi, but she has loads. Miss Popularity, right?

Still, thinking about Sebastian—where is he?—I only hope that Aria is reunited with her hero sooner than later.

She deserves the same happiness I’ve found.

Having a soulmate is a most excellent thing. There’s this feeling of rightness, of completion that settles over me just knowing that Sebastian is mine. Even though the pallet we share is currently empty of him, I know without really knowing why that he’ll be back because, if he’s mine, that means I’m also his.

Besides, I already know that he believes we’re meant to be with his whole heart. He’ll definitely be back.

Sure, we have our problems. What new couple doesn’t? I mean, I still don’t know what he looks like, and there’s the little matter of us being in the middle of our story hanging over our heads. I might not have been a scholar or anything when it comes to Greek mythology, but I’ve learned a lot over the seasons; when it’s our lives on the line, we all do. Everyone in Delphi shares what they know, and the biggest takeaway I got out of all of the stories is that they never really end on a good note.

And if they do? It’s only because
