Chapter Thirteen

Egan pulled away, but I kept my eyes on Donovan as he marched toward the dorm. He was pissed, but I couldn’t leave my friends hanging. I got that this situation wasn’t ideal, but we’d had a good night together. My lips still tingled from our kisses.

“You keep turning your neck like that, it’ll break,” Lillith joked, then turned serious. “You do realize you and him can’t happen, right?”

“Yeah, I know.” I really did, but my heart refused to accept it. I understood that I needed to put space between us, but I didn’t know how. We had two classes together and were lab partners. My wolf didn’t even want to be away from him, which made the struggle even harder.

“Girl, if you keep this up, you’ll dig your own grave.” Roxy turned in her seat and pointed her finger in my face. “I’m not trying to be a bitch, but if you care for him, you need to stay away.”

I wanted her to piss off, but she was only looking out for me. I had to remember that. “You’re right. I don’t know what’s going on, guys, but …” I didn’t want to tell them about the tug. It would make Roxy angrier.

“He’s hot as hell, just like his buddy.” Roxy flipped back around. The air conditioning blew her hair back in my face.

I smacked it out of the way. “So, I’m not the only one drooling over a human.” She’d stepped into that one all on her own.

“But I’m not putting myself around him,” Roxy retorted. “So don’t even try to compare us.”

“No, you two just stare at each other with hate and lust,” Lillith said and elbowed Katherine in the side. “Am I right?”

“You’re getting too much pleasure from their situation.” Katherine leaned forward so she could glance at me over Lillith’s body. “Just ignore her. She loves stirring up drama.”

“Once you’ve lived for over two hundred years, then you can lecture me on what you find entertaining.” Lillith lifted her head with her nose held high.

“So what if you’re attracted to a human?” Egan turned back onto the main road, heading toward Haynes. “I don’t think it’s a huge deal.”

“Her dad would never allow her to even kiss a human.” Roxy snorted loudly. “If she did and he ever found out, the guy would be dead in seconds.”

“Why?” Egan’s hands tightened on the steering wheel. “I still don’t get it. Yes, they’re not strong like us, but they have a heartbeat just the same.”

I hadn’t ever considered that, by him and me merely kissing, I could be putting his life in jeopardy. My dad had eyes and ears everywhere. I was being reckless, and my life wasn’t the one at stake.

“Because your mate represents your strength just as much as you do,” I said, repeating the words Dad had told me over and over again. “If you align yourself with a weakling, you’re no better than them and must be treated as such.”

“Whoa, never heard you talk like that before.
