Chapter Six

Larissa’s horse took off, away from the where the shot had come from. Chase pulled her by the hand. She barely was able to get to her feet when another shot sounded. Chase kept her in front of him as they sped toward the rocks. Breathless, she made it to safety. With her back to the stone wall, she waited for Chase to tell her what the hell had happened. Instead, he leveled his rifle and pulled the trigger.

“Where’s Tom?”

“He’s down.”

Another shot.

Her mouth turned dry. She failed to register the fact Tom might be hurt. “Down?”

“Darlin’, stay here.”

He was going to leave her? Horse hooves pummeled the ground, sounding as if the attackers were going away from them. Her legs weakened, and she dropped to the sandy ground. Heart pounding, she waited for the all clear. When none came, she stole a peek around the rock.

“Oh, my God.”

Chase was leaning over Tom, who was on the ground. She raced out. Chase looked up but didn’t wave her back either. Blood dripped down Tom’s sleeve. She knelt beside him, her heart nearly bursting.

“Chase, take off your shirt.”

His eyes widened for a second, but he did as she asked. After she folded the material, she placed it over the wound. “Tom, this might hurt, but I want you to press on the injury. It’s the only way to stop the bleeding.”

Tom obeyed, even though his face had lost some of its color. She could tell he was trying not to wince.

“You get hit anywhere else?”

“No.”

Tom turned to Chase. “You get either one?”

“I hit one of them for sure. That’s why they took off.”

She sat back on her butt. “Did you recognize them?”

“No. From their excessive tattoos, I’d say they aren’t anyone we should be messing with. Is there something you’re hiding, darlin’?”

“I really thought Phil was after me, but maybe Shayna was right.”

“How’s that?”

Tom lifted his hand off the wound but returned it quickly when more blood leaked out.

“I put two very bad Tucson gang members in jail about a month ago. I think the men who shot at us might be part of the Southside Posse Bloods gang. They might be out to take revenge on me.”

“Holy shit. We’ve got to get you to safety.”

“I am safe with you.”

“Apparently, not safe enough.”

Tom wanted to ride back right away, but she insisted he remain on the ground until she was convinced the bleeding had stopped. “You need to drink more water, too.”

He rolled his eyes but did as she asked and downed a goodly amount. He then fussed when she insisted on using her bra as a sling for his arm.

“Why do I need this?”

“It’s to keep the arm by your side, so you don’t make it bleed more.”

“I look stupid.”

“I want you to live, so shut up and wear it.”

He grumbled some more and then refused help getting up on his horse even though he only had one good arm. At least he had the sense not to rush back to the resort.
