Saturday night

AFTER HANGING UP with Sandy, Reece thought about LA and her conversations at the wedding with Michael and Shanahan. She absolutely wanted to put the past behind her. She was ready to let it go—almost.

She began searching for any traces of Ju-Long in Shanghai. She planned to ask him—again—about Chang’s death. This time, her questions would be more direct, more focused. She would get answers.

With twenty-four million people living in Shanghai, Reece hit a brick wall. She called the People’s Police and after explaining to half a dozen people that she was an American detective researching an old murder case, she finally got someone on the line that spoke English.

The police woman promised to call Reece back when or if she found something.

Acknowledging that searching for Ju-Long in Shanghai might be a dead end, Reece then contacted the LAPD. She asked for any old files regarding Chang. The LAPD was surprisingly helpful, especially for a Saturday night. They sent what they had to the sheriff’s department.

Reece headed down to check them out.

But the files didn’t provide any insight. The murderer had never been found, and the case hadn’t been officially investigated since 2014. There wasn’t any new information that Reece didn’t already know.

So she called the LAPD back.

“Without any new evidence, I can’t reopen a case from seven years ago, period,” the commander in charge said.

“There’s no way it happened as described,” Reece proclaimed. “I guarantee it, commander.”

“That might be true, detective, and I have no reason to doubt you, but there are too many violent cases and murders that happen here every single day, to search into something this old without any new leads to go on. We barely have the funding and personnel to stay current. Now, if you have anything new, please let me know. Otherwise, I have work to do and a family to get home to.”

Reece hung up, frustrated.

One more person to call. He picked up on the first ring.

“Shanahan, remember how I asked you to look into a file for me if you go to LA?”

“Of course. What did you need?”

Reece listened to a dull roar in the background. “Where are you right now? Sounds noisy.”

“The airport. I’m headed to LA.”

“What happened to keeping me informed? I didn’t realize you were leaving so soon.”

“I’m just trying this out. I don’t know if I’m fully committed. And I’ve been jobless for weeks now, so it feels good having something to do. Plus, Jessie wants to do some sightseeing, so we get Sunday this way. Anyway, what d'you need?”

Reece bit her lip. She decided to get on with it.

“Chang and his father, Ju-Long, sometimes used to refer clients to a firm when they didn’t want to take them on. It was called Lochner and Associates. Sam Lochner owned the place and his son, James Lochner, was a friend of Changs. Can you go there and eyeball some files of any clients they took on after Chang’s death? I’d call them myself, but if something’s fishy, I doubt they’ll be very forthcoming.
