Jeffrey
Jeffrey held Dana to him, afraid to let her go. Heâd feared heâd arrive too late. That when he found her, sheâd be hurt or dead. Then, when he had finally reached her, it was only to find her blanketed in dark magik. The darkness had been so thick and so strong that even his wolf side had issues seeing in it.
But heâd smelled her there, and heâd sensed sheâd been injured. Now, seeing he was right, that she had been hurt, he wanted to bring each and every one of the things that hurt her back to life only to kill them himself. Heâd tear them limb from limb, much like the ghoul nearest them had been.
As her lips met his bare chest, Jeffreyâs body reacted. The shirt tied around his waist did little to hide his arousal. The smell of mint and citrus assailed him, leaving a low rumble coming deep from within his chest. He tightened his hold on Dana. The thin material of her running clothes only served to make him harder.
Now wasnât the time or place for any of that. Too bad his lower region hadnât caught on to that fact.
He tried to will it away.
That didnât work.
Dana put her forehead to his chest and sighed. âIt all happened so fast. Everything was fine and then it was pitch black.â
âYou had to be scared,â he said before remembering who he was talking to. She was fierce, and he highly doubted sheâd admit to being afraid.
âI was torn between running and making peace with what I was sure was my end,â she confessed, surprising him. âThen I remembered that Iâd managed to make it through a vampire attack. Shadow monsters were not going to be how I went out.â
Her ability to find dark humor during a trying time made him smile. The next he knew, he was kissing the top of her head and then closing his eyes, continuing to hold her tightly to him.
He felt the weight of someoneâs stare on him and opened his eyes to find his best friend looking dumbfounded. Brett was standing there, his mouth agape as he blinked at Jeffrey.
Stratton strolled up alongside Brett. âYou look thunderstruck.â
âI am,â said Brett. âNever seen him behave this way over a woman before.â
With a shrug, Stratton bent near a dead body. âHeâs not acting out of line for a shifter whose mate was in danger. Iâm more shocked that he hasnât tried to club her over the head and drag her off to a wolf den while shouting âmine.ââ
Jeffrey stiffened, jerking Dana against him harder.
She grunted.
His mate?
No.
That couldnât be.
Could it?
He thought about the overwhelming urge heâd had to get to her. How his sole driving force was protecting her. Then he thought about what it had felt like when heâd first met herâwhen sheâd punched him in the face. And how heâd spent two days basically begging her to go out with him.
His eyes widened, but he didnât release her even as the realization that Strattonâs words werenât misguided struck him.
