Chapter Ten

I glanced through the glass pane next to the sheriff’s office and saw him concentrating on some papers spread across the desk in front of him. “Hey, Roy,” I said, hesitantly stepping into the room.

He looked up and smiled. “Hi, Rylee. Where’s Logan?”

“Actually, I’m the one who needed to talk to you.”

“Is everything all right?” he pushed to his feet. “Did something happen to Grams?”

Roy and my grandmother had always been close friends. I believed the sheriff secretly would’ve liked more from the relationship. “Grams is fine. Everything’s fine.” The latter part of my statement depended on a person’s perspective.

Roy blew out a sigh of relief. “Come in and have a seat.” He returned to his chair, the worn leather squeaking under his weight.

The layout of his office was similar to Logan’s. Only it was larger and had several more filing cabinets lining one of the walls. I closed the door so no one outside could overhear our conversation, then sat across from him.

“What’s on your mind?” he asked.

I wasn’t sure where to start. “What is your stance on the paranormal?”

He rubbed his chin. “I’m not sure I understand the question.”

“This may seem weird, but do you believe in the supernatural, specifically ghosts?” I couldn’t remember Roy ever stating his view on the topic.

You couldn’t live in Cumberpatch and not know about the residents’s fascination with the unknown. It was one of the reasons our town had a steady influx of tourists. The guided tours and reports of hauntings in our cemetery were also a big draw.

“Does this have something to do with Jonathan?” My father’s obsession with haunted houses wasn’t a secret, so it was easy to see why he’d come to that conclusion.

“No, it has to do with me and something that happened with a spirit seeker,” I said.

“A what?” he asked, leaning forward.

“A… Let me start from the beginning.” I spent the next fifteen minutes giving him the highlights of how I’d gotten my new abilities and had spent the last year helping wayward ghosts. I finished by telling him about the course I was taking to obtain a spirit sleuthing certification.

I wanted to make sure he could handle my ghost-seeing abilities before telling him I could see magical auras and break curses and hexes.

His intense look reminded me of Logan when he switched from boyfriend to investigative mode. I had to give him credit for not interrupting when I knew he had to be compiling a long list of questions.

I finished by placing my hands in my lap and giving him an expectant look.

“So, you can see and talk to ghosts?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“Are there any here now?” He glanced around as if a spirit would magically appear from his inquiry.

A wave of relief swept through me when I didn’t hear any apprehension in his voice, only genuine sincerity. “Not at the moment.”

“I take it your family knows,” Roy said.

“Yeah.”

“And Logan?” He quickly masked the disappointment flickering in his eyes.

I nodded. “He’s been great about the whole thing.
