Chapter Ten
I glanced through the glass pane next to the sheriffâs office and saw him concentrating on some papers spread across the desk in front of him. âHey, Roy,â I said, hesitantly stepping into the room.
He looked up and smiled. âHi, Rylee. Whereâs Logan?â
âActually, Iâm the one who needed to talk to you.â
âIs everything all right?â he pushed to his feet. âDid something happen to Grams?â
Roy and my grandmother had always been close friends. I believed the sheriff secretly wouldâve liked more from the relationship. âGrams is fine. Everythingâs fine.â The latter part of my statement depended on a personâs perspective.
Roy blew out a sigh of relief. âCome in and have a seat.â He returned to his chair, the worn leather squeaking under his weight.
The layout of his office was similar to Loganâs. Only it was larger and had several more filing cabinets lining one of the walls. I closed the door so no one outside could overhear our conversation, then sat across from him.
âWhatâs on your mind?â he asked.
I wasnât sure where to start. âWhat is your stance on the paranormal?â
He rubbed his chin. âIâm not sure I understand the question.â
âThis may seem weird, but do you believe in the supernatural, specifically ghosts?â I couldnât remember Roy ever stating his view on the topic.
You couldnât live in Cumberpatch and not know about the residentsâs fascination with the unknown. It was one of the reasons our town had a steady influx of tourists. The guided tours and reports of hauntings in our cemetery were also a big draw.
âDoes this have something to do with Jonathan?â My fatherâs obsession with haunted houses wasnât a secret, so it was easy to see why heâd come to that conclusion.
âNo, it has to do with me and something that happened with a spirit seeker,â I said.
âA what?â he asked, leaning forward.
âA⦠Let me start from the beginning.â I spent the next fifteen minutes giving him the highlights of how Iâd gotten my new abilities and had spent the last year helping wayward ghosts. I finished by telling him about the course I was taking to obtain a spirit sleuthing certification.
I wanted to make sure he could handle my ghost-seeing abilities before telling him I could see magical auras and break curses and hexes.
His intense look reminded me of Logan when he switched from boyfriend to investigative mode. I had to give him credit for not interrupting when I knew he had to be compiling a long list of questions.
I finished by placing my hands in my lap and giving him an expectant look.
âSo, you can see and talk to ghosts?â he asked.
âYes.â
âAre there any here now?â He glanced around as if a spirit would magically appear from his inquiry.
A wave of relief swept through me when I didnât hear any apprehension in his voice, only genuine sincerity. âNot at the moment.â
âI take it your family knows,â Roy said.
âYeah.â
âAnd Logan?â He quickly masked the disappointment flickering in his eyes.
I nodded. âHeâs been great about the whole thing.
