* Ukrainian prose writer of the 1920s and 1930s Valerian Pidmohylny. Author of the novels The City and A Little Touch of Drama as well as a number of short stories. Pidmohylny was repressed by Stalin’s regime during the so called “Executed Renaissance” following the Ukrainian cultural revival of the 1920s. Most of his works were banned in the USSR until Gorbachev’s era of glasnost and ultimately Ukrainian independence in 1991.
