Chapter 16
Derek dragged his eyes open and looked around. The angle of the sun had changed. It was afternoon now, the bright sweetness of the morning long gone.
And fuck, if everything in his damned body didnât hurt.
His shoulder throbbed, and the wound in his side ached. He held himself as still as possible, knowing movement was just going to cause further pain, but that was inevitable.
And heâd lived through a lot worse than this. Survival was always the most important thing. The good thing about pain was that it let you know you were still alive.
He looked back toward where the plane had gone down, his mind much clearer now that his body had been able to rest and his Becky had patched up the worst of him.
He stared toward the wreckage. He needed to look at whatever was left of the plane so he could figure out what the hell went wrong. There was no way on a plane like that, with the way theyâd been flying, that he shouldâve lost both engines.
It was statistically possible, but the chances were so astronomical he couldnât wrap his head around it.
His eyes shifted up to the sky. Sun positioning put them at late afternoon, probably around three p.m. Four hours since the crash. Clearly, air traffic control knew theyâd gone down, but they wouldnât have been fast enough for anyone to see the smoke from the explosion. And judging by the clearness of the air, said explosion hadnât caught the surrounding forest on fire.
Derek needed to go take a closer look at the wreckage and see how to best prep them for when help arrived. He was a little surprised thereâd been no sign of anyone yet.
He turned his body the other direction toward Becky. She slept, leaning against the rock, her face still slightly distressed despite her being unconscious. Surviving a plane crash would do that to a person. But he knew it was just as much the fact that sheâd had to fix him up.
Despite everything, she couldnât stand the thought of causing him pain. It had been clear in every touch as sheâd slipped his arm back in the socket and stitched his wound. If she couldâve taken the pain on herself, she wouldâve.
The womanâs soul was damned near as beautiful as her face, and that was saying something since Derek considered her the most gorgeous person on the planet.
It didnât surprise him in the slightest that Becky had chosen to be a vet. She wasnât shy like her mom, but she was gentle like Dr. Annie. Both women hated seeing pain in anyone. For Becky, especially animals.
Watching her lie there so vulnerable reminded him why he needed to keep his distance from this beautiful creature. Monsters and angels couldnât live together and survive unscathed. The monster would taint the angel. Bring her down with him and tarnish her forever.
His chest ached, heart hurting in an entirely different way from the rest of his body as he looked at Becky.
