Ivan whistled to himself as he drove along the track from the village of Mehtar Lam to Greg’s farm. He’d spent the night at Ma Kelly’s, and the girl he paid for had more than justified the fee. He’d promised to look in on Faria and the kids, and it wasn’t a chore. Faria was still an attractive girl, and in other circumstances, he’d have made a play for her. Still, she was also a good cook, and he knew he could expect to eat the first decent home cooked food in a long time.

He was a veteran of more shootouts than most men had hot dinners, although these days he paid others to do the dirty work. So when he was within two kilometers of the farm and heard the firing, he stopped to check it out. It wasn’t difficult to work out where the shots were coming from. The noise of the firing pinpointed the location of the gun. Unless he missed his guess, a heavy machine gun, Russian, the deep roar of a 12.7mm was unmistakable.

Probably a DShK, which is strange, why would somebody be using a heavy machine gun so close to Greg’s farm?

He was naturally cautious and parked his SUV, a newly acquired British Range Rover, picked up his weapon, an M4A1, checked the powerful Colt Python in the holster at his side, and went forward on foot. What he saw was unexpected, even in Afghanistan, where violence was as part of everyday life as eating and drinking. The DShK was mounted on a truck, technical style, surrounded by seven men who watched the gunner direct a stream of bullets toward Greg’s farmhouse.

The heavy gunfire was literally chewing out great chunks of woodwork from the house, and already there were places where it was possible to see inside, holes three or four inches wide. Even as he watched, he saw someone inside push a block of wood against the largest of the holes to cover it. Someone was alive in there, and he hoped to God they were all still alive. Except what could he do against eight men and a heavy machine gun? For the first time, he regretted coming alone. If he had several of his men along, he would’ve sent them to deal with them, but knowing he’d spend the night at Ma Kelly’s, he hadn’t bothered.

It explained the reason Blum couldn’t get an answer when he tried to call the telephone inside the farmhouse, and Greg had made the wrong call. He’d assumed he could reach the Russian oligarch and deal with him before there was another attack on the farm. Ivan took out his cellphone, about to call his men in Bande Pitaw when he stopped. Faria and her family couldn’t survive much longer, and it would take his men hours to get here. He had to do something, and fast. Risking his life wasn’t his style, but neither was leaving the family of his best friends in the lurch.
