“I can’t believe Mom is coming to the zoo,” Leela said as she dropped a decorative pillow Kari made in second grade to the bedroom floor. “That’s so many hours of Mom.”

Aurora chuckled as she turned the comforter and sheet down. Nothing worked Leela up so quickly as the idea of spending quality time with her parents.

“Please, don’t laugh,” Leela said. “I know we’ll be in Portland, and it would be weird for us not to see her, but I was hoping for dinner or something.”

“Then, you should have reached out before Kari beat you to it.” Aurora joined Leela under their summertime covers and turned off the light, but let the ceiling fan slowly rotate over them. “We’re going to have to remember that from now on. Be more proactive.”

“And she’s smarter, stronger, faster, and oh, by the way, can hear our thoughts.”

“Things have changed fast, that’s for sure.”

Leela groaned. “I’d like to end the day on a less stressful note. Kiss me goodnight. That ought to do it.”

Aurora placed a single soft kiss on her lips. “And we do have some positives from the day. Kari did some amazing things. I still can’t believe her heart rate hardly spiked during her run.”

“Or how easily she out deadlifted me.”

Aurora threaded their hands together under the covers. “I’m glad Kari knows she doesn’t have to pretend with us. Feeling like you have to hide who you want to be . . . that’s tough. But, at least she has you.”

“I don’t get it.”

Aurora’s eyes hadn’t fully adjusted in the darkness, but she knew a crinkle between Leela’s eyes was there. “You understand how difficult it is trying to be someone you’re not.”

“That I do, and I’m very glad I stopped trying. Authentic Leela is superior to the fake version. Plus, I don’t think you could have fallen in love with the person I was when I was twenty.”

“I think you’re underestimating my ability to love you. I can love hundreds of versions of you.”

Leela rested a hand on Aurora’s waist and snuggled closer. “Could you love a version of me that had to wear a pantsuit every day instead of worn-out jeans? Or instead of me complaining about the price of vet bills, bitched and moaned about . . . insurance?”

“You already bitch and moan about insurance, and you look really hot in a pantsuit.” Aurora flashbacked to their courthouse wedding day and Leela’s most recent trip to the bank. Leela exuded sex appeal and confidence in the tailored look. “I think while you’re happy in jeans and a t-shirt or flannel, there’s a part of you that likes the feeling of a little power and being fancy.”

“You do, do you?”

“I do, and I think that’s fine. You’re allowed to evolve.”

Leela tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “You too, for that matter. You’re not the same person I met either. You’re more confident now. More ambitious.”

Their gentle pre-sleep heart-to-heart started to make Aurora’s nerves surface again. “Too ambitious?”

“Trash that thought permanently.
