Themed Coffees

Pick an idea, such as my “Moving Theme,” and get creative! Below is a list of ideas to get you thinking. Remember to tie in as many elements to the theme as possible—everything from the invitation, to decorations, food, and even take-home souvenirs!

International Delight. Because so many military families are world travelers, you could pick this theme and have everyone bring food and a souvenir from another county. During the icebreaker, when you want to help people get to know each other, each person could show and tell a little about their souvenir. If you have a fun bunch of people, you could even ask them to come dressed in a costume from that country!

Give Yourself a Coffee. This idea came from Anne Abel, who used to give a coffee for herself, shortly after they moved to a new location. She invited all her neighbors in order to meet them. She also gave an annual “Love Tea” at Valentine’s Day to show her friends and neighbors how much they are loved.

Tacky Coffee. Rather than stress and fret about a formal coffee, try giving a tacky coffee instead. I did this at my house and pulled stuff out of my “garage sale” box to decorate with. I even put Elvis on Velvet for display by the front door. We gave prizes for the tackiest costumes and refreshments.

The snacks included Cheese Whiz on saltines, and one woman even brought a tray of vanilla wafers with cool whip and a peanut on each. You don’t even have to dust your house for this one!

Restaurant Theme. If you don’t have time to host a monthly event at your home, check out a local restaurant that can handle the arrangements. Your group may meet for dinner at a different restaurant each time. You might even try to have it at lunchtime to accommodate those spouses that work outside the home. More and more coffees are being moved to central locations due to working spouses and busy schedules.

Wedding Theme. Have everyone bring their wedding photos; number them and place them on a poster board. Have everyone guess who’s who; the one who gets the most right receives a prize (such as a marriage book or a bouquet of flowers). It’s easy to plan the menu around a wedding cake purchased from the local bakery, nuts, dinner mints, and other wedding reception goodies. The decorations could follow the same theme; you may even want to have a few of the bolder women share their favorite or funniest honeymoon memory.

Baby Shower. I’ve been to some coffees that have a dual function, serving as a baby shower for the women in the unit who are expecting. Group gifts seem to work best for this type of event, but keep in mind that not every member of your unit will appreciate a function that serves as a baby shower. These are best reserved for the focus on the mom-to-be rather than a focus on unit business or announcements. That way if a member declines to attend, she won’t miss any official news.
