ALERT!
Insufficient mana to activate that ability.
My health bar ebbed to a few pixels as heat blasted off my new clothes and then my skin.
Not good.
Really not good.
I might’ve been okay if this was all the damage I was going to take.
I still had the landing to deal with though.
Oh, and let’s not forget the rest of the building that would fall on me after I landed… and the fact that I’d be buried under tons of flaming debris.
I hadn’t meant for my plan to turn into a suicidal one.
I hit the ground—decades of martial arts training took over, and my body tumbled to distribute the impact.
My health bar flickered at three pixels.
The edges of my vision dimmed, and I tried to ball up to protect myself from the warehouse about to crush me…
…but it never happened.
I untucked and looked up.
The fire, the warehouse, every bit of the old High Hill was gone.
The only thing over my head was a double band of dusty stars. The large butterscotch-colored moon balanced on the horizon, and its smaller lavender sister satellite hovered close.
I laughed and grabbed two handfuls of dew-drenched grass and kissed them.
The only reason I could think of why I was alive was that by removing Silver Mask from the fight before he got his power boost, Karkanal and his band had won the stalemate.
Their curse had been lifted.
Which also meant Pendric and I had been released in the nick of time from the battle.
Too bad I’d never get a chance to ask Silver Mask how he knew me or the story with the Ritual Sacrifice gloves.
I got to my knees and gave silent thanks to… well, whoever, that my gamble had worked. I stood and saw my new clothes were charred rags. Great.
Bell Ringer gave a whinny that sounded like a laugh.
The titan horse and his pet knight, Pendric, were fifty feet from me. Karkanal and three other barbarians were with him.
Pendric looked fine. His armor smoldered a bit but otherwise was still freshly polished in the moonlight. Bell Ringer appeared unscathed (I wasn’t sure if blade or fire could hurt that monster).
The barbarians, however, were covered in char and blisters, and I wondered how they were standing at all.
Karkanal’s mangled face literally cracked into a grin as he spotted me.
“We have won the day,” Pendric called out. He gave a magnanimous wave to the surviving barbarians. “All here fought with bravery and great skill.” He frowned at me. “But where did you run off to, Hektor?”
I heard disapproval in his tone.
“Upstairs there was—”
“It does not matter,” Karkanal declared. He clapped Pendric on the shoulder (or tried to, but his hand passed through the knight). “The double-damned wizards of the Black Hand have been crushed.”
As he said this, the bodies of his fallen men faded back into view. They were dead and charred on the field. Some had even been blown apart. They all rose though, wounds closing, limbs reattaching, and burns fading as they smiled and chanted: “Kar-kan-al, Kar-kan-al!,
