When Dorothy entered her sister Grace’s little café, that doubled as a bookstore, the delicious smells of baked goods made her mouth water. It was unusually quiet in here, but she hadn’t been in the café for quite some time and had almost forgotten what a cozy place her sister owned. At least something good came from her sister losing her husband at such a young age.

Gracie looked up from the counter and smiled while Dorothy crossed the room. But as always, her sister’s smile didn’t quite reach her big, blue eyes. It’d been five years. Gracie had married Owen right out of high school, just before he’d entered boot camp. Dorothy had never told her sister how similar her story had been to her own. Only Richard had married her best friend instead of her. Whenever Dorothy thought about it, her heartbeat seemed to slow momentarily. It still hurt. The pain still hadn’t gone away. Even though Richard made her breakfast yesterday and then kissed her passionately goodbye when he’d brought her home. There was a tiny place inside of her that still hurt. Like a small glass shard that still sat wedged in her heart, poking her every once in a while. She needed to let that go—she knew that.

She just didn’t know how.

But at least Richard was still alive. Unlike Owen, who’d died when he was barely twenty years old. Somewhere in the Afghan dirt.

A hero.

“Hey”—Dorothy grinned at her little sister—“this meeting happened a lot sooner than I thought it would.”

Gracie rounded the counter, and Dorothy hugged her and pulled on her sister’s perfectly straight, blond hair. Why was she the one out of the four that had to inherit her grandmother’s curls, when every one of her sisters had perfectly straight, beautifully shiny hair? Not fair.

“I know. Can I get you a coffee while we’re waiting? You look different. Did you do something with your hair?” her sister asked.

“Nope, and a coffee would be great.” Dorothy’s stomach growled. As soon as the other two arrived, they would head on over for lunch at their favorite Italian restaurant, only a few blocks from Gracie’s cafe.

The restaurant was her family’s favorite—the one they’d celebrated all the major life events at when they were young.

Gracie went back behind the counter, and Dorothy wandered over to the bookshelves. Enormous chairs invited customers to settle down, get a coffee, and read a book.

She loved how Gracie had combined her love of reading with her love of baking. She combed through the books and searched for the section of new releases. A good book would take her mind off of Richard and Eric and the new program that would start in a week.

“Hey, I can’t find the new releases. Where did you put them?” She raised her voice slightly so Gracie could hear her over the hissing of the industrial-grade coffeemaker.

“No new releases anymore. I decided I like the older stuff better.”

Oh, oh. Dorothy turned around and eyed her sister. She looked pale and like she’d lost weight since they’d last seen each other.
