His religious books

The religious books reflect the climate of the times. The influence of Erasmus had been very strong in Spain at the beginning of the sixteenth century,67 but the influence of the Council of Trent is clearly evident in the books in the library of de los Ríos, as is the influence of the School of Salamanca, for many of the books have authors from there or were published there. The hostile attitude of de los Ríos to Muslims has already been mentioned and there are two books on heresies, one of which is specifically on the conversion of Muslims, of whom there were, and are, many in the south of the Philippines.

The fourth book, previously owned by Santibáñez, is the 1567 book of Heitor (Héctor) Pinto, In Esaiam Prophetam commentaria, but there it simply says ‘Frater Ygnacio Santibáñez’, so it was presumably in the possession of Santibáñez before he was made a bishop, which was in Mexico in 1595.69 In the case of volume 1 of the In Quatuor Evangelistas Enarrationes, 1532–1535 by Denis the Carthusian, it is clear that it belonged to Santibáñez before de los Ríos because the former’s name is crossed out and that of de los Ríos is in a less prominent place. The books by Arias and Oleastro both have the full name of Santibáñez written in Hebrew.70 Although there are copies of the other four volumes of the work of Denis the Carthusian in the library of Santo Tomas, none of them has retained its title page and there are no annotations inside the books to help identification. It is certainly surprising that de los Ríos should have so many of the books of Santibáñez, since the latter succeeded in getting very few books to the Philippines. Santibáñez suffered a bureaucratic delay in Mexico, which meant that he had to raise money to sustain himself there. He wrote to the king on 1 November 1596 that he was:

I have been selling the books till I am left with only two chests, which I cannot do without, of the eight that I brought from Burgos with other things …71
