Chapter 14–Cayron

He looked around the peculiar group, his eyes falling on Zayak, who tore into a piece of cooked rabbit meat, bits of food spluttering from his mouth as he chewed. His eyes wandered over to Raya, whose gaze remained distant and lost, her arms wrapped around her knees. The cohesion amongst the group no longer remained without Nasila and the emptiness behind their eyes echoed in Cayron’s.

He yearned for her at the Balaga Caves when he stumbled upon her grave, but it was minute compared to now. He mourned for hours in the imprisoned room, yet seeing those she created with her blood wander amongst the forest without their leader, widened the hole where his heart was. Zayak took over the group, and his cruelty left marks and bruises that were felt rather than seen.

Cayron drew himself up to his full height, and straightened his curved back, ignoring the muscles cramping. ‘We should,’ he stammered, his voice shrill. He took in a deep breath and deepened his voice. ‘We should get to the Island of Asrani as soon as possible so we can defeat these Thinkers and the noble Feeler families.’ A few looked towards him, uninterested as their dull eyes stared beyond.

‘Let me finish my food. Then we can go.’ Zayak licked his fingers, leaving trails of meat, fat, and juice in his matted beard. Cayron looked away, wiping the image from his mind, nearly gagging.

Zayak wiped his face with the sleeve of his coat and beckoned for Raya to join him. She rose, and he grabbed her waist, planting a wet kiss on her cheek. ‘What do you say, Raya? Shall we join this fool and meet those Janaks?’ Her body tensed as she tried to pull away. Zayak’s long nails dug into her exposed flesh, the nail marks leaving an angry red imprint. ‘Say yes, Raya.’ He scratched her, and she cried out.

‘Yes, take us Cayron.’ She sobbed and Zayak shoved her aside.

Cayron looked at his toe, the little scratches now caked with bits of dirt and blood. The group ignored Raya’s tears, and Cayron clenched his fist, telling himself to ignore the mounting anger at Zayak’s abuse. Having suffered from taunts and torments, Cayron wanted to reach out and comfort her. Raya showed immense potential with Nasila as her mentor, her eyes bright and alert, but was now replaced by a woman gazing at the ground. The drastic change in demeanour shocked Cayron and another shred of pain stabbed through him as he craved for Nasila’s leadership. She’d reprimand Zayak for his atrocious behaviour, possibly stripping him of his powers if he carried on. The only person he acknowledged as his equal was Daylon, who was pursuing his own quest for vengeance against his mother’s killers. He detested his family and Zayak, wishing he could bash their heads together and burn them.

‘What are you waiting for? Didn’t you hear my girlfriend?’ His eyes swivelled from Cayron to Raya, and his lips curled. ‘Raya, cover up, you slut.
