Nevertheless, the redevelopment of urban heritage need not be over-commodified, and spaces of community rather than commercial imperatives can be developed, for example, as debate about the transformation of Lansdowne Park in Ottawa, a multipurpose city-run open space that is home to heritage buildings, an arena and stadium as well as several weekly and annual community events, including the city’s farmers’ markets, indicates. Lansdowne Live!, a proposal in 2009 by a group of local business owners to build a large-scale hotel and shopping centre at the park became a lightning rod for debate about the park’s ‘potential’ and ‘real’ contributions to the livability of the city, the quality of life of its inhabitants and the experiential environment for visitors (Donohoe et al. 2011). Indeed such activism, which in the long run led to the Ottawa farmers’ markets being permanently located at Lansdowne, is also reflected in growing interest in the role of markets as a focal point of urban agriculture (Nasr and Komisar 2012; Hardman and Larkham 2014).
