I glanced up and met his sea-foam green eyes. His wolf was close as he sniffed the air around me, searching for the change in my scent.

“Oh, fine,” I huffed and put my fork down. “I was practicing the mirror because I’m supposed to meet Wynne tonight.”

“Absolutely not,” he snapped with no wiggle room in his tone.

“Well, you’re not invited,” I said with a smile and popped another bite in my mouth.

“Britt!”

“What?” I asked, taking another bite of my breakfast before folding my arms over my chest and mirroring his angry posture with my equally defiant one.

Sighing, he unfolded his arms and leaned forward. He met my gaze and pressed his lips together in a hard line, making his features seem so much sterner than the happy-go-lucky man I knew and adored. “Brittany. What if something happens?”

Relaxing against the back of the booth, the tension left my body and I unfolded my arms. “Ev, something could happen to me walking out of this restaurant.”

“Yeah, but I would be there to protect you. I can’t protect you when you disappear.”

Softly, I responded to his very audible concern. “I know you would wrap me in bubble wrap if you could, but I have to be able to protect myself. You won’t always be there. We’re friends and that means we trust each other.”

“I know but I’ve seen what can happen to someone who doesn’t heal like werewolves when they get mixed up in our world,” he said, and my stomach plummeted at the utter bleakness in his voice.

I took a sip of my coffee, watching his tight shoulders and the stiff line of his neck as he ground his teeth. “Did you want to talk about it?” I asked.
