So Hercules bent his legs and his back like Atlas. Then he reached up and took the weight of the sky on his back.

Atlas moved away.

“Oh, that’s better,” he said. He stood up tall and rubbed his shoulders. Then he turned and walked away towards the sun.

When Atlas came back, he was carrying the branch of an apple tree. The golden apples hung down and shone in the sunlight.

“Here are your apples,” said Atlas. “And now I must go.” The giant began to walk away.

“Wait!” shouted Hercules. “We had a deal! This was just for a day!”

The giant god laughed. “We agreed I would bring you the apples. I never promised to carry the sky again.”

Hercules thought of the goddess and her warning. His strength would only last for one day.

“You’re right,” Hercules said. “You’ve been holding the heavens for years. It’s my turn now. But before you leave, I need your help for a moment.”

“What do you need?” Atlas asked.

“It’s my back,” said Hercules. “If I’m going to hold up the sky forever I just need to move a bit. I just need to get myself into the right position. If you could just hold the sky for a moment while I move?”

“Oh, all right,” said Atlas and he slowly lifted the sky off Hercules and put it on his own back.

“Thank you!” shouted Hercules, grabbing his club.

“And thank you for the apples.” Then he ran off back through the tunnel.

Atlas gave a giant roar of anger. But Hercules was free. He had his apples and he had proved that he could do the impossible. Again. He set off back to the king’s palace.

He knocked at the palace door.

“Who is there?” said the king.
