CHAPTER SIX

Skye had often wondered in what way she resembled her mother.

‘There must,’ she thought, ‘be some link between mother and child that, sooner or later, will express itself.’

But up to date she could find nothing in herself which she recognised as part of Evelyn Cleve’s character or personality.

Skye was very small and there is something about a tiny woman which makes every man with she comes in contact with eager to protect her. Her loveliness she took as a matter of course and generally forgot to make the most of herself.

In Scotland she was dazzling, in London she was often surpassed by others who took trouble with their clothes and with their faces.

Skye liked old clothes, comfortable shoes and the society of intelligent people.

She loved more than anything the free life in Scotland, the moors, the hills, the cascading burns and the river winding past Glenholme Castle.

She could not, however, for long stand the atmosphere of age and sheltered peace, which was as much a part of her grandfather’s household as he was himself.

She was driven by a conviction within herself, that she must stand alone and so be self-sufficient.

She knew too that she could not find such independence in Norman’s household and he would offer her too luxurious and too comfortable an existence.

Whilst she had been growing up, she had tried to talk to her mother to find the answers or some explanation to the questions that puzzled her. But Evelyn had failed her daughter.

Norman, with his direct approach to life, fascinated Skye, He taught her far more useful lessons than any she might learn at school.

It was Norman who discovered that Skye had a fine eye for colour and encouraged her to persevere at her painting.

When Skye had finally decided that she must live her own life, she went off to Chelsea, determined to spend at least two years studying art.

The only condition that Norman and her grandfather made in consenting to her plans was she should share a flat with some girl considerably older than herself and someone of whom they approved.

It was fortunate that a distant cousin of Evelyn’s, who was making quite a considerable income out of decorative work, was prepared to take Skye as a lodger for, as she expressed it, ‘a trial run’.

The experiment turned out to be a complete success. Mary Parker was nearly forty, she was plain, sensible and humorous when the mood took her and responsible enough to satisfy both Lord Brora and Norman.

Norman, taking her to luncheon alone, confided his anxieties for Skye’s future and was reassured by Mary’s sound common sense.

“Give her her head now when she wants it,” she said, “and you will have no trouble in the future. But if you don’t she will break out sooner or later and there will be the devil to pay. She is not a limp languid body like Evelyn was.

“You must forgive me saying so, but after Colin’s death she was a dead woman and you know it! Skye has both character and personality.
