Chapter 12
Nithya stood in her spot for a long moment, looking up at him in silence. He rested his elbows on the railing not breaking their gaze. She took in a hissy breath feeling heat encompass her as she took one step at a time. She stopped on the top-most step and smiled at him in an attempt to ease the tension building between them.
âGood night.â
He nodded and looked at her in silence.
She walked toward her room and barely took a step past him when she felt his fingers on her elbow, the gentle tug stopping her. She stood still, his touch tingling her skin.
He turned toward her, his fingers gently running along her arm before pulling it away. âGot a few minutes to talk?â
âYes,â she said, her voice a whisper.
âI want to talk about the project.â
She nodded and said, âI want to talk about something else before that. Can we go into the study?â
âAfter you.â He gestured for her to walk ahead of him, and she did.
She stepped into the study and waited for him to close the glass doors and let out a sigh. âSid, I donât know what happened on the deck, but it did. I donât want things to be weird between us.â
He stepped closer to her but stood a couple of feet away. âWhat happened on the deck, Nithya?â
âI⦠I got carried away. I shouldnât have⦠Iâm sorry.â
He reached out to gently run his fingertips along her jawline. âWhy are you sorry?â
She looked up at him and saw something flicker in his eyes. âWe⦠we have to work together. I was happy for what you did for the students at the youth center today, and I wanted to thank you.â
âOh, that was a thank-you kiss?â
âYes.â Her voice shook, raising her eyes to look at him.
He moved, closing the gap between them to pull her into a devouring kiss, his mouth worshiping hers as their tongues tangled. She gasped for air as he kissed her endlessly, and she only wanted more. She ran her fingers into his thick hair, pulling him closer to her as her body melded into his.
Her breathing was ragged, and her legs had turned to jelly by the time he pulled back to look at her, smiling. âYou are welcome.â
She couldnât help but smile and walk away from him, her cheeks burning red. What had gotten into her? She walked into her room, shut the door, and stood with her back to it.
Her heart thudded, and her lips trembled, but a newfound excitement engulfed her. She slowly took her fingers to her lips as if to make sure what she was feeling was real. She looked at herself in the mirror and saw how flushed her cheeks were, and that brought a smile to her face.
Whatever it is that was flaring between them had been brewing from the time he returned, and she had ignored it. And the sizzle came back with a vengeance. She walked into the bathroom to wash her face and get into bed, refusing to think too much about the kiss, rather kisses, they shared.
