Faith prepared herself for a long wait in the emergency room but was surprised when a soft-spoken nurse called her name right away.
âOne of the rare benefits of having a police escort,â Brad said when he recognized her surprise.
Faith appreciated Officer Swansonâs efficient manner and corny sense of humor. She tried to imagine him with hair, a sandy crew cut to match his eyebrows.
As they passed through the double doors leading to the examining rooms, Faith spotted Captain Mack, sporting a bandage from elbow to wrist on his left arm and heading in their direction from the opposite end of the hall.
âWhat happened to your arm?â Faith asked.
âMy rookie mate gaffed me. The worst part is, we lost the fish.â He noticed her face. âThe bigger question is, what the hell happened to you?â
Faith beamed red. âItâs a long story.â
âYeah. One that ends with me beating the shit out of that scrawny husband of yours.â Mack gently examined her bruises. âGood thing your father isnât alive to see this.â
âThe police are handling the situation, Uncle Mack,â she said, gesturing toward Officer Swanson. âNo need for you to get involved.â
âThis little lady is my goddaughter, Officer. Her father was my closest friend.â
âI understand.â Swanson tipped his hat to Mack. âWeâll take good care of her.â
The nurse coughed, reminding them she was waiting.
Mack engulfed Faith in a one-arm bear hug. She buried her face in his chest, inhaling the scent of sweat mixed with fish that reminded her so much of her father.
âYou call me if things get out of hand,â he whispered. âI know people who can help.â
A nervous giggle escaped Faithâs lips. Mack would never hurt a fly, but he had a reputation of hanging out with some pretty rough characters.
âPlease donât tell Mama. She has enough to worry about already.â
Mack furrowed his brows. âYouâre not still living with him, are you?â
Faith shook her head. âI moved out today. Iâm staying with Sam. At least for the moment.â
âAll right. Iâll keep your secret safe this once. But there better not be a next time.â
âThere wonât be. I promise,â she said, making a promise she hoped she could keep.
He gave a little bow. âWell then, my lady. Iâll be off.â He popped his red Inlet View Marina cap back on his head and disappeared down the hallway.
Officer Swanson parked himself at the nursesâ station and proceeded to chat up the ladies while Nurse Erica completed the preliminary part of Faithâs examination. Faith appreciated the nurseâs gentle touch in taking her vitals and her nonjudgmental manner when questioning her and photographing her bruises. It took a special kind of person to be a nurse, a person whose silent presence helped a patient relax.
When Faith returned from X-ray, Swanson was ready with pen and paper to take her statement. While they waited for the doctor to come in, Faith told the officer about Curtisâs inability to hold a job and the money problems theyâd had because of it. She told him about the unauthorized withdrawals sheâd made from Sweeneyâs.
