His driver drops the three of us off at Le Cinq, and Jonas escorts us both inside, each on one elbow. He’s dressed in a black, tailored tux, I in a shimmering, black dress, complete with baby bump, and Sidney is wearing a red velvet dress with a white silk ribbon that ties around her waist. I flat-ironed her hair just like mine, which frames our faces like smooth silk. I kept the conversation restricted to our style while getting ready for our date. However, the kitchen-honey incident still would round itself back into the conversation. ‘People do weird things when they’re pregnant,’ I told her. But this only eluded again to her mother, and the strange things she did when Sidney was a baby. I explained that her mother was sick and never meant to hurt her. I was just really hungry for honey.

Our coats are taken by the hostess at the door, and we are then greeted by the maître d’. “Your table is ready, Monsieur Fairbanks,” he smiles, and shows us to a prepared table, complete with wine and candles. Like a real gentleman, Jonas pulls out both our chairs and helps us in.

This place is stunning, with white pillars and archways trimmed in gold. Round tables covered in white linen and chairs upholstered in silk fabric. A string quartet plays quietly in the corner. I feel like a princess in a fairy tale. But then, my baby kicks, and I’m jolted back into reality—the reality of my lie, my secret. I want to enjoy this evening if only for a moment. How will I ever tell him about his baby?

I break from my spell when he touches my hand, and I look into blue, sincere eyes. Is this us again? Or is it just part of the conditions? His smile shows true intent as he traces down my fingers and I try to match his sincerity.

“You look sublime tonight, Julia, yet your eyes look a million miles away. Is everything okay? Is the baby okay…after,” he turns to Sidney and then back to me, “after the kitchen incident?”

“Yes, the baby is fine. I…I was remembering the moment,” I say, and he squeezes my hand. “Why didn’t you tell me your date was with Sidney?”

“Would you have reacted differently?” My eyes jolt to the ceiling. He’s answering my question with a question…again. He’s always loaded, and I should know better. Will I ever learn?

“Answer my question first,” I say, tossing my hair over my shoulder. His smile tells me he’s searching for a reason. And there is only one—to make me jealous. But I want to hear him say it.

He leans over and whispers in my ear, “I wouldn’t change a thing,” he says, and lightly kisses me on the earlobe, then backs away wearing that bearded, roguish grin. Loaded.

The waiter comes and takes our order, and I suggest the chef’s recommendations—I recognize his name as one of the star students of Le Cordon Bleu from five years ago, Chef Michael Pavlov.
