Chapter Nine

Mia

We drive. We don’t really go anywhere, Elias just drives while we hold hands and I try desperately to think.

We don’t go to the yurt. We don’t go home.

I want to go back to his cabin, nestled on top of a mountain, surrounded by trees, but I know it’s too risky. I don’t want to draw the MC to where he lives, not when this should be my problem to deal with.

Finally, he parks. I have no idea where we are — somewhere in Springville, still, which is two towns away from where we live. We didn’t think that anyone from the MC would be here, but I guess we were wrong.

It’s dark, and we’re tucked away on a side street, somewhere in the business district. There’s no one else around, but at least we’ll be able to see if anyone’s coming.

I swallow hard, then clear my throat.

“We need a plan,” I say, fighting to keep my voice level. “I think that was Filter and Shrike. They’re probably already telling my dad that they saw us together, which means that when I get back, he’s going to be pissed but maybe I can—”

“Mia,” Elias rumbles suddenly, his voice cutting through the quiet of the car. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”

I take his hand in both of mine, running my fingers over his forearm until I find the ugly lump where the baseball bat hit him.

“I know,” I say quietly. “I wish I could say the same for you.”

“I’m fine,” he says, his voice husky. “Trust me, I’ve seen much worse.”

His hand is on my face, in the darkness, his rough thumb skimming over my cheekbone. I close my eyes and try to collect myself, try to figure out what to do next, where to go from here, because I don’t know.

I lean in, my forehead on his strong shoulder, because with everything swirling around in my brain right now, I just need him. I need him close, I need to touch him and feel that he’s real and solid and still here.

Elias kisses my forehead, his hand on the back of my neck, and I reach one hand up to circle around his, my fingers winding up through his hair.

“I’m here,” he rumbles, his voice low and steady. “I’ve got you.”

I turn my head, kiss his neck. I can feel his slow, strong pulse beating beneath my lips, and I kiss him again, then again. His skin is warm and slightly prickly with stubble, and before I know it my lips are on his jaw, his chin, then they’re on his lips.

Elias kisses me back fiercely, his teeth skimming my lip as he opens his mouth against mine. Suddenly I need him like I need air, and I press myself against him, my fingers clenched in his hair. I undo my seatbelt with my other hand and before I know it, I’m practically climbing over the center console, trying to sit on his lap, desperate for his touch.
