CHAPTER 13

***DARCY***

Darcy was more flustered than she’d ever been. Just the thought of Patrick sleeping in the room next to her and her body was suddenly spiraling out of control. She was warm all over, her magic was tingling through her veins, and thrills were rocketing through her one after another. Even worse, she knew that all her friends had seen her reaction, and she’d done the only thing she could think of and run away, which was even more embarrassing.

“Hey, what am I missing?” Patrick said, catching up to her. “What’s the big deal if I move into the attic?”

She turned to face him, “I live in the attic,” she said. “We’re going to be right there……together.”

A slow smile spread across his face, “And you don’t trust yourself to be that close to me,” he said. “I don’t blame you; I am pretty irresistible.”

“That’s it, I’m going to bed,” she said, starting for the stairs again.

“Okay, I’m sorry, I was just teasing you,” he said. “I didn’t know you lived in the bed and breakfast.”

“We all did once,” she said. “Well, make that twice, since we grew up here. I thought you did research on the house? That should have popped up right away.”

A sheepish look appeared on his face, “I might have lied about that,” he said. “I’m sorry, that was the old me.”

She looked over at him, the realization that he didn’t know she was a shifter making her stumble, “Hogan’s Folly used to be an orphanage. The eight of us were left here as newborn babies over the summer twenty-four years ago. Millie, the woman who owned the house, raised us, and when she died, she left the house to us, and we all came back,” she said, hoping it would be enough to buy her some time to decide if she could trust him enough to tell him the entire truth.

Patrick didn’t say anything as they climbed the stairs to the third floor, “So, the eight of you have been together since you were babies,” he finally said. “How come none of you were ever adopted out? I mean, there are lots of people who want to adopt a baby.”

He followed her down the hallway, waiting for an answer, but she didn’t say anything until they got to his room, “The answer to that question is complicated, and I’m really tired,” she said. “Maybe we can talk about this tomorrow.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to upset you,” he said, looking down at her and searching her face. “I was just hoping to get to know you a little better. I didn’t mean to come on so strong. I guess I’m not very good at it.”

“Don’t worry, I’m not upset,” she said, her heart beating a little faster when she looked into his eyes. “It was a perfectly normal question; I just don’t have a normal answer.”

He carefully pulled her into his arms, “I have to admit, now I’m even more curious, but I understand if you’re not ready to share with me,” he said, searching her face again.
