Chapter Thirteen
Driving up to the boutique hotel, he saw that all of the contractor’s trucks were gone, and instead, there were mostly rental cars in the parking lot. Now wasn’t that just nice for two men who had almost gotten a woman killed, Aiden thought bitterly.
He parked away from the rest of the vehicles, underneath a copse of trees, and took advantage of the walk to center himself. Aiden knew what he wanted to accomplish, and it shouldn’t take long.
He walked up the flower-lined flagstone stairs leading to the entrance.
“Can I help you? Do you have a reservation?” The young girl behind the desk was pretty and chipper.
“I’m here to visit with Mr. Sellers.”
“Is he expecting you?” she asked with a head tilt.
“No, but he’ll see me. Tell him that Aiden O’Malley is here.” Aiden was careful to stay back from the desk, not wanting to tower over the lone female in the lobby. She lifted the phone and spoke quietly.
“He’ll be out directly.” She pointed to the coffee station. “Help yourself.” She smiled.
Aiden shook his head.
Jim came out from the back office.
“How’s Evie?” he asked as soon as he saw Aiden. The man looked haggard. Good.
Aiden tilted his head toward the entrance door and opened it. Jim walked through it.
“Let’s take a walk.”
As soon as they got outside, Jim glanced sideways at him. “A dead body in the forest is going to be noticed,” Jim said, only half joking.
“I’m not going to kill you,” Aiden replied as they headed out behind the hotel toward the tree line.
“You considered it though.”
“Drake did.”
Jim’s step faltered. It was clear that the former Army Ranger had been out of the game for too damn long. Still, Aiden had no pity.
“All I ask is that you keep Blake out of it.”
“That’s up to you.”
The leaves from the trees muted their footsteps as they started up an incline. When they were finally out of sight of the hotel, Aiden stopped.
“Do your worst.” Jim’s expression was resigned.
“I don’t want Evie to have any reminders of Turkey.”
“Neither do I.” Jim spread his hands apart and gave Aiden a look of relief. “Neither does Blake. God, we would do anything to erase those days from Evie’s memory.”
“You can’t. She dreams about them every night.”
The man winced like he’d taken a hit. “Fuck. I’m so fucking sorry. I should have never tried to help Nathan.”
Aiden looked at him incredulously. “That wasn’t your error. You’re a Ranger for God’s sake, you’re supposed to be trained to think. Why would you have taken an innocent into a potentially dangerous situation?”
“Antakya is such a historic city, and I didn’t want to cut Evie’s vacation short.”
“What about Blake? Did you give two shits about him? Your buddy was asking for thirty large in cash, and you just danced right into the situation with two people you say you love.”
Jim blanched.
“You need to get gone.”
“I don’t understand. That’s it? You just wanted to say that to me?”
Aiden strove for his center. “No, you stupid ass.
