Chapter 23

Hayley endured another nightmare-filled night. She didn’t fully settle into any restful sleep until Jake lay down beside her and held her. He fully intended to slip out and into a chair after Hayley had fallen asleep, but when the time came, she looked so peaceful in his arms that Jake couldn’t let her go. Soon her slowed breathing and heartbeat lulled him into his own slumber. The sun woke him. His eyes opened and his first sight was Hayley’s sleeping form cuddled into him. Jake couldn’t regret staying. It felt good to hold her.

The alarm clock rang. They had forgotten to turn it off last night. Hayley frowned- not again. Mornings sucked. She groaned and reached over to turn off the alarm. Hayley settled back into Jake. She still hadn’t quite gotten her bearings just yet. Hayley was half awake when her hand pressed against a very toned chest under a soft jersey T-shirt. Her eyes shot open. Hayley’s mouth dropped slightly. She angled her head up to find Jake gazing adoringly at her. Hayley startled a bit, “Oh my.”

“Good morning,” Jake crooned, his voice just a little husky. Hayley was more beautiful now than any woman had a right to be when first waking up.

“Morning,” she blushed a little.

“A guy could get used to this view,” Jake smirked.

“You’re not that hard on the eyes either,” Hayley murmured.

Jake stroked her cheek with the back of his fingers. He brought his hand up to cup her neck. His eyes drifted down to Hayley’s mouth.

“I have morning breath,” she warned.

“And I have stubble,” Jake pressed his lips to hers. Hayley relaxed and just let herself enjoy the kiss. They lingered there for a few moments.

Jake’s phone beeped. Hayley sat up to let him get it. Jake swung his legs over the side of the bed. He grabbed his cell. “The package I ordered last night got here,” Jake said. “I’ll get dressed and go get it.”

“Ok,” Hayley sighed. She really didn’t want to be alone right now.

Jake stood. He turned to Hayley. “I’ll be back,” Jake kissed her forehead. She watched him exit. Hayley pulled her knees to her chest and looked around her room. It felt empty somehow once he had left. It was too quiet and that let her mind wander. Here she started another day, but Phillip wouldn’t. That thought made Hayley want to crawl back under the covers, but she knew that would fix nothing. She blew out a breath and dragged herself out of bed. Might as well use the alone time to get cleaned up.

Hayley pulled her hair back in a ponytail before brushing her teeth and washing her face. Next she picked out clothes for the day. There was a knock at her door as she was bringing them out of the closet, “It’s me.”

“Come in,” Hayley came into the room and beckoned.

Jake entered carrying a medium-sized box. “I got you something,” he presented it to her.

“You didn’t have to get me anything,” Hayley replied.
