CHARLIE

Three more people sing before Evie is called up. She gives me a nervous smile, but she doesn’t look like she’s going to back out. She gets up on stage and pulls the microphone out of the stand. She points at me when the opening notes of her song begin.

I should have known when the opening piano notes of Barry Manilow’s Mandy begins to play. She smiles a mischievous grin at me, and I'm floored. I can't take my eyes off her as she sways to the music—her voluptuous curves beneath the sequined dress sparkle under the stage lights. I try not to notice the other men in the club taking notice of her. I can't blame them, though. I'm just as dazzled by her as they are.

Evie starts to sing. Her voice is good in that way that’s impressive without trying to show off like the Adele wannabe ahead of her was doing. A booth of women against the wall loudly and drunkenly join in. Evie smiles and encourages them to join her on stage. They do, and she holds out the microphone, so they can all sing along together. The bar erupts, with others joining in and cheering them on.

As the music's final notes fade out, applause erupts from the audience, and I'm on my feet cheering the loudest. Evie walks down the stage steps and heads straight for me. She pays little attention to the people trying to talk to her as she passes them.

Her eyes are locked on me.

“You were fan—“ I start to say, but her lips crush against mine in a searing kiss. I forget the people, the noise, the bar around us—my sole attention on her.

When she pulls back, it's like the volume in my head is suddenly unmuted, and I can hear someone attempting to sing Bohemian Rhapsody.

"Do you want to get out of here?" She asks breathlessly.

I can only nod since my brain is still reeling from that kiss. I take her hand in mine and lead her out of the bar, up the stairs, and towards the hotel. I booked a room, assuming it would be nearly impossible to find a cab to get home after midnight. Thankfully it’s not far, and Evie can keep up in her heels.
