Startled, I sit up abruptly. I groan when I realize the clattering that woke me is that Romand somehow managed to knock over the table that they slide over the bed in hospital rooms. Lucky for him, heâs magically sound asleep.
I grumble to myself as I stand and move into the small bathroom to take a shower. There really isnât a lot of room to move around with the toilet and sink in here.
âWe need to get back home,â Tar says, making me flinch in surprise in the shower.
âWhereâve you been?â I question my wolf.
âMe? Iâve been patiently waiting to return to our mate while youâre running across the countryside, looking for anotherâs!â
I roll my eyes. It seems Tar has woken up on the wrong side of my head today.
Tar snaps, âKeep your snide comments out of your head. Iâm tired of gallivanting. I want our mate!â
âCalm yourself. Alexandraâs completely safe. We have no need to act all irrational.â
âYou think so?â he mocks me. âWhile you were getting your beauty rest, I was feeling all the pain Alex is in! We need to go home.â
I have no clue what he is talking about. âWhat do you mean all the pain that Alex is in? I feel no pain from her.â I slept well. Didnât I? Romand and I came in to rest last night.
Nothing feels out of the ordinary. Thereâs a soft smell of lavender and tea tree. The she-wolf who set up the room smelled of these scents last night. Nothing feels wrong.
âYou seem to have forgotten all about our mate! When was the last time you thought to call her? When was the last time anyone updated you on Alex? Youâre so busy saving everyone else you forgot you left our mate to play with the wolves,â Tar seethes at me. Now he really is losing it.
âTar, Alex is not playing with the wolves. Sheâs an Alpha, and sheâs fine. You need to stop worrying.â As soon as I finish my sentences, pain pierces through my spine. âWhat in theâ¦â I gasp before falling to the floor in pain.
Romand springs from the bed. âAlpha Corwin, are you okay? Can you hear me? Nurse!â I hear him yell.
Things feel fuzzy. Everything feels at a distance from me. A nurse enters the room. The same one from before. I can tell by her scent of lavender and tea tree. She comes close to me and places a cloth on my head. Instantly, the pain is gone. Somethingâs not right. The pain was real. Too real.
âTar! Tar! Can you hear me?â
Heâs gone. I canât feel him at all.
âWhat did you do to me?â I yell at the nurse in rage.
âNothing. Nothing. You were in pain. Your wolf was upset. He needed to rest, so I calmed him.â She steps back quickly but speaks plainly.
âWhat do you mean you calmed him?â I glare at her, fire in my eyes.
She shrugs. âJust that. When I placed my hand on your head, I calmed him.
