TWELVE

Sammi Jo had been up at the crack of dawn. She couldn’t sleep after the events of the night before. How had that detective managed to grab his friend before she plummeted to her death? The scene kept replaying on a loop inside her head. If he hadn’t reached her, she would have smashed through the rotting wooden porch to her death. It made her shudder just thinking about it. And where the hell was Riley?

She decided to pay her Aunt Dolores a visit. Nobody knew that hospital better than she did. She hardly ever spoke about working there, not unless she had to. But when she’d found out that Sammi Jo was going to be taking care of the buildings, she’d sat her down and given her a rundown on what kind of place it was. At first, Sammi hadn’t taken her too seriously. But as time went on and she saw and heard things that couldn’t be explained, she realized that her aunt was telling the truth.

Her tires crunched along the narrow gravel driveway, alerting her aunt to her arrival. She was already outside on the porch, huddled in her bathrobe, her arms folded across her chest, waiting for Sammi Jo, who got out of the car and waved at her.

“Morning, Aunt Dolores.”

Dolores shook her head. “What in God’s name are you doing here this early, Sammi Jo?”

Sammi Jo couldn’t help but grin. Her aunt never changed. “Sorry, I know it’s too early to be calling on you, but I need to talk to you about the hospital.”

Her aunt’s exhale was epic. “I knew it. I knew that it was going to be nothing but trouble when you agreed to take care of that wreck. I told you it needs burning to the ground and it still probably won’t be enough to cleanse that whole area.”

Dolores walked inside the farmstead. It was Sammi Jo’s favorite place ever, so homely and modern at the same time. Her aunt had come into money a long time ago, after receiving a large sum most unexpectedly from some famous person who she’d taken care of at the hospital, and she’d spent it wisely. After buying this place and renovating it, she’d carried on working at the hospital until the day its doors were closed and the windows were boarded up. Dolores didn’t like to talk much about her old workplace or her benefactor, but she said she’d been blessed, and in return she did the only thing she could do, which was to carry on helping the poor souls in her care as long as she could.

Sammi Jo sat down in one of the big comfy armchairs and waited for Dolores to pour them both a mug of fresh coffee. Her aunt made the best coffee she’d ever tasted. Taking the hot mug, Sammi Jo wished that she didn’t have to go prying into the kindly woman’s past and bring up memories she’d rather forget. Taking out her phone, she found the picture of Riley Holt and passed it to Dolores.
