Sammi Jo had been up at the crack of dawn. She couldnât sleep after the events of the night before. How had that detective managed to grab his friend before she plummeted to her death? The scene kept replaying on a loop inside her head. If he hadnât reached her, she would have smashed through the rotting wooden porch to her death. It made her shudder just thinking about it. And where the hell was Riley?
She decided to pay her Aunt Dolores a visit. Nobody knew that hospital better than she did. She hardly ever spoke about working there, not unless she had to. But when sheâd found out that Sammi Jo was going to be taking care of the buildings, sheâd sat her down and given her a rundown on what kind of place it was. At first, Sammi hadnât taken her too seriously. But as time went on and she saw and heard things that couldnât be explained, she realized that her aunt was telling the truth.
Her tires crunched along the narrow gravel driveway, alerting her aunt to her arrival. She was already outside on the porch, huddled in her bathrobe, her arms folded across her chest, waiting for Sammi Jo, who got out of the car and waved at her.
âMorning, Aunt Dolores.â
Dolores shook her head. âWhat in Godâs name are you doing here this early, Sammi Jo?â
Sammi Jo couldnât help but grin. Her aunt never changed. âSorry, I know itâs too early to be calling on you, but I need to talk to you about the hospital.â
Her auntâs exhale was epic. âI knew it. I knew that it was going to be nothing but trouble when you agreed to take care of that wreck. I told you it needs burning to the ground and it still probably wonât be enough to cleanse that whole area.â
Dolores walked inside the farmstead. It was Sammi Joâs favorite place ever, so homely and modern at the same time. Her aunt had come into money a long time ago, after receiving a large sum most unexpectedly from some famous person who sheâd taken care of at the hospital, and sheâd spent it wisely. After buying this place and renovating it, sheâd carried on working at the hospital until the day its doors were closed and the windows were boarded up. Dolores didnât like to talk much about her old workplace or her benefactor, but she said sheâd been blessed, and in return she did the only thing she could do, which was to carry on helping the poor souls in her care as long as she could.
Sammi Jo sat down in one of the big comfy armchairs and waited for Dolores to pour them both a mug of fresh coffee. Her aunt made the best coffee sheâd ever tasted. Taking the hot mug, Sammi Jo wished that she didnât have to go prying into the kindly womanâs past and bring up memories sheâd rather forget. Taking out her phone, she found the picture of Riley Holt and passed it to Dolores.
