IVY

I roll my body lazily. My arm is aching, having been folded under my shoulder all night. My intention is to lie flat on my back to relieve the pressure, but I hit a wall of… something.

I grope behind me. It’s a man. Definitely a man, because—

“Good morning.”

I spring into awareness, making sense of where I am and, more importantly, the man sleeping in my bed.

Turning to face him, I grin. I’m not in my bed—it’s his bed, which almost feels like our bed. And as he promised, he’s with me when I wake up.

“I must’ve done something right last night,” he quips.

“Hm?”

“Because one, you slept soundly. And two—” He nods at where my hand is.

On top of his morning wood.

“You’re clearly awake.” I abandon his crotch and kiss him.

“Bodyguards always wake up before their protectees.”

It occurred to me last night that I’d wake up before he did so I could watch him sleep. The first and last time I saw Mark in his slumber was when he was Noah’s full-time bodyguard. Suffering from PTSD after his first kidnapping, Noah couldn’t sleep for weeks. One night, I found the former Green Beret lying on the couch with him, falling asleep together in the middle of The Incredibles 2. I couldn’t bring myself to wake them, so I covered them both with a quilt, hoping they’d go on till morning. Mark woke up then, but Noah didn’t even stir.

I sit up, and only now do I realize I’ve taken two-thirds of the bed. “Sorry. It must’ve been uncomfortable for you.”

“Uncomfortable? You almost banished me out of my own bed!”

I laugh. “Blame me. I haven’t slept with a man since… I don’t know…”

I do know. It was since my ex-husband decided that my nanny was more sexually attractive than I was.

“Sorry,” I repeat.

Mark plants a kiss on my lips. “It didn’t bother me. You come first.”

That seriously wakes up my appetite. But before I can initiate anything, his phone buzzes with a text message.

“Everything okay?” I ask.

“It’s the hospital. Ty.”

“How is he?”

“He’s awake. Doctors say he’ll make a full recovery.”

“Oh, thank God! Anything on Jones?”

“He’s still in an induced coma. But doctors are hopeful.”

“I really hope he’ll be okay.”

Mark holds my hand. “Yeah. He’s good.”

“He is.” I huff. “Mark, was I a good client to you?”

“Initially, I thought you’d be the type who didn’t want to be protected, giving us a hard time. But you weren’t. You’re a good client and a good person.”

“I hope Jones and Ty think so too.” Good people have gotten physically hurt because of me—that’s something that I haven’t fronted before.

“I’m sure they do.”

I lie back down, my head on his abs. “Mark, do you really believe my son is still alive?”

“Yes.”

“How do we find him?”

“Now that we know what he looks like, we can sketch it out and try to find a match with facial recognition.” He holds my shoulder. “May I say he looks like you?”

“I thought so too.”

“Noah actually told me that ‘Bro’ looked like him.
