Chapter Eleven

Della tried to tamp down her racing heartbeat and breathing. She also tried not to go into panic mode. But it was hard to do because this wasn’t just about her.

This could be about the baby.

“Did Dr. Tipton say specifically what was wrong?” Barrett whispered to her as they made their way to the front of the building. It sounded as if he was trying not to panic as well, but his voice was louder and stronger when he told the dispatcher that he had to head out for a meeting.

“No,” Della answered once they were out of earshot of the dispatchers and deputies in the bullpen. “He didn’t want to get into it all over the phone. Plus, he wants to go ahead and do the ultrasound.”

Della considered all the possibilities. Then, pushed those possibilities aside. Just going out into the open could be dangerous, and she didn’t want to add to their troubles by being reckless. She kept watch around them as Barrett and she hurried out and into the cruiser.

Problems with lab tests, Della mentally repeated. Well, she knew it wasn’t the actual pregnancy test because the doctor hadn’t gotten back those results the night before. This had to be something else.

Even though the hospital wasn’t far, it seemed to take an eternity for them to get there. Barrett parked by the ER, and they hurried in, making a beeline up the hall to Dr. Tipton’s office. Just as the doctor had said, he was waiting for them and ushered them right in.

“What’s wrong?” Della immediately demanded, not wanting to wait for polite greetings.

“It’s not that bad,” he assured her, and seemed alarmed. Probably because she looked ready to come unglued. “But you’re anemic, and your blood sugar’s a little higher than I’d like.”

“Is that serious?” Barrett said at the same moment that Della asked, “What does that mean?”

“Well, the anemia is a fairly easy fix with supplements I can prescribe. The blood sugar, though, will require some monitoring. We don’t want it to get out of control because it can cause complications with the pregnancy and the baby.”

Oh, mercy. That definitely wasn’t good.

“Your OB will give you this information sheet.” Dr. Tipton handed her some papers he took from his desk and motioned for them to follow him out of the office and back down the hall. “But I wanted you to go ahead and have it. For now, your OB will likely want to monitor you more closely.”

It was a reminder that she needed to make the OB appointment ASAP. Yes, she had a boatload of stuff going on, but the baby had to be her top priority.

“I managed to squeeze you in for an ultrasound appointment,” Dr. Tipton continued, leading them into another room. “After the blood loss and shock you just went through, I wanted to go ahead and get it done. I can have the results sent to your OB. Is your OB here in Mercy Ridge?”

“No, Culver Crossing. Dr. Abernathy. I haven’t actually had an appointment with him yet, but he was someone my doctor recommended.
