To the people of Geraardsbergen The Muur is the Tour of Flanders and since its first inclusion in 1950 it has become one of (if not the most) iconic sights in the whole of the sport. The Muur isn’t simply a single street, though – it is a twisted amalgamation of cobbled roads that begins as you ride through the market square and rumbles up past the cathedral. After passing the cathedral, turn left on to Vesten and the stones are so perfectly set you’ll hardly notice them as you climb gently upwards to where the real action begins. Turning sharp right you join Oudebergstraat and now you’re on the proper cobbles. It’s no more Mr Nice Guy as you meet Belgium’s finest attempt to shake your hands from the bars. Next the road (if you can call it that) banks sharp right, eases back for a short stretch, then bends 90 degrees left into one of the most demanding stretches of climbing you’re likely to face. Forcing the pedals through each revolution, searching for traction, you reach the top and turn left. Now ready yourself for the cherry on top – The Kapelmuur – arguably the most photographed piece of road in the history of cycling. This 50-metre cobbled curve, rough, rugged, and as steep as hell, delivers you to the summit at the base of the Chapel. You’ve made it.
