And Mexican in these parts usually meant Comancheros.

Then, less than twenty yards to the right of Fargo and Charlie, more Mexicans left the pines and moved swiftly across their field of vision, continuing on down the slope toward the wagon. They moved in a low crouch, their rifles held in readiness. In the moonlight, their white, loose-fitting pants contrasted sharply with the dark weave of their ponchos. A few had cartridge belts across their chests.

And they kept coming, sifting down out of the pines with a speed and swiftness that impressed Fargo.

"I count at least ten," Charlie whispered.

"More than that. Twelve/'

As they spoke, Mexicans gained the meadow from a thick clump of pine on the slope directly across from them. Fargo picked out one of the Mexicans approaching the wagon, rested his sight on the fellow's cartridge belt, and waited. It would be fatal, he realized, to open up with the rest of the Mexicans still in the pines above them. He was sure Buffalo Wallow and the rest of the Utes realized this as well.

But Fargo did not find it easy to hold his fire. Not with them murdering bastards liable to open up on them at any moment.

Fargo heard a soft rustle behind him. Before he could turn, the cold touch of a revolver's muzzle was pressed gently but firmly aginst the back of his neck, close behind his left ear. At the same time Fargo heard Charlie's gasp.
