Chapter Fifteen

Nothing was going his way and no matter how hard he seemed to try to keep things in line, his life seemed to unravel twice as fast. Back at the base camp, they switched out with another set of volunteers to work a new set of coordinates. Roger was busy talking to the new teams and setting them up for the next track of looking, including the search for Grover.

Casper had been upset about Michelle going missing so soon after his father’s death, but with his dog nowhere to be found on top of it all, it was making him lose his damn mind. In the four years he’d owned him, Grover had never done this before. In fact, he had rarely ever even left his sight. The thought that his dog was truly gone tore at him. It just wasn’t possible.

Why hadn’t he just put him on a leash?

He ran his hands over his face as he tried to reconcile the reality with his self-loathing.

All they could do now was keep searching.

He turned to Kristin. “I’m going back out there. I know you need to get some rest and it’s getting dark, but I can’t leave. I can’t stop looking.”

Kristin looked exhausted, but she didn’t argue. “Did you hear from your brother?”

He shook his head. “You should give him a call and let him know how the search is going. In the meantime, I’m going to make some calls to my team at FLIR and see if we can get some other equipment out here.”

He nodded grimly, feeling as though they were grasping at straws.

It was strange, he had been on so many of these search missions and yet this was the first time he had ever felt so helpless...and hopeless. Maybe it was because it was his dog and it wasn’t like searching for a person who could possibly call out if and when they got close, even if they were hurt. Grover, if hurt, was at the mercy of the team.

He went to his bag and withdrew a leash he had stuffed in the bottom of his gear without any real intention of using. If he got Grover back, he would be on this thing anytime they even thought about getting out of a vehicle. In perpetuity, the dog was grounded.

Taking out his phone and walking to the edge of the camp for a little privacy, he called William. Just when he thought his brother wasn’t going to pick up, he answered. “Did you find her?”

“So I’m taking it that you haven’t heard from her, either?” Casper asked.

William huffed.

“Don’t give me that,” Casper said, his patience almost nonexistent. “Are you on your way or are you still too busy with your lawyers to come out and actually look for your wife?”

“What are you talking about? Some guy, Bell... I’ve been talking to him, and he told me that you all had it under control. ‘Our teams are on it’...and ‘we won’t stop until we find her’. That’s what he said.
