Vivienne

Vivienne looked over the GPS coordinates on the paper Professor Santoly had given them and typed them into Quick’s phone while he prepared the boat for launch. The professor was a clearly cared for his students. She got that feeling from the man right away. And the way he helped them get answers and information they probably shouldn’t have told her he wanted to know what happened to his student.

She wasn’t sure what good finding the two toxic places would do, but it was the only thing they knew about Tiko that was somewhat recent. His roommate at the dorm had been charming, but not much help. The vibes she got from him were confirmed when she shook his hand at the end of their conversation. And he was not being deceptive.

“You ready?” Quick called from the front of the boat.

“Yeah, whenever you are.”

Quick stepped behind the driving console and started up the boat. Slowly, he backed out of the slip. He was very careful. Always careful, she noted. He had a way about him that was caring, though she wasn’t telling him that. He’d probably growl at her for hinting he was soft.

When they were talking with Sheila outside the island restaurant, she’d seen a side of him she didn’t think existed. He wasn’t rough and gruff the way he’d originally come off.

He seemed to know about her life and her son’s life. Did he know about that kind of information for everyone on the island? Was she supposed to know that too? That would take her forever to memorize so much. Perhaps with time, all that would come.

She paused mentally. Whoa. Did this mean she was staying on the island and keeping it? Luckily, Quick’s next question pulled her from her train of thought.

“You got the first location figured?” Quick asked, bringing her out of her reverie. She lifted the phone and looked at the screen.

“Yeah. I downloaded an app that would give us a map of where we were in relation to the spot. I guess we just go to where it says.”

“An app, you say?” Quick commented.

“Yes. An app.” She wondered… “Quick, how old are you?”

“Why?” he huffed, sounding offended.

“You seem to be a little behind on technology,” she said. “You been living under a rock?”

Quick laughed. “Actually, on a rock.”

Vivienne was caught off guard with his joke and laughed along with him. Maybe he wasn’t as bad as she initially thought.

“Nah,” Quick said, “I came to the island when I was a kid. I don’t care much for people or the mainland, so I didn’t keep up with technology. As long as people didn’t bother me, I didn’t bother them.”

“How do you have a mobile phone then?” she asked.

“Adriana wanted me to have one whenever I went to shore, in case I needed to call someone. Like I knew anyone I wanted to call.” He snorted. “I noticed you don’t have one. How do you know all about this stuff?”

She shrugged. “Just do.” That came down to simple economics.
