As both his passengers were asleep Jean-Luc did not stop in Fontainebleau. He drove on to beat the storm which petered out into a fine drizzle as they met increasing signs of urbanization. By the time the sleek silver Rolls Royce entered the city limits, the bluish shadows of dusk were closing through the late afternoon. The Paris roads were wet and slick, and the street lights reflected waveringly in the puddles.

Nikki woke with a start at the sound of blaring horns—Jean-Luc was navigating his way through the whirlpool of cars streaming around the Place de la Concorde.

“Oh, I can’t believe it. We’re actually in Paris!” Nikki exclaimed excitedly. On her incoming journey she and Leigh had bypassed Paris, heading straight south from Le Havre.

Jean-Luc shot off down a side street and turned into the Place Vendôme, bordered by fashion houses, banks, and jewelers. The hotel’s awnings fluttered a wet welcome as he pulled up in front of the building. He looked over his shoulder at Felicity, who was gently snoring, limbs spread like a starfish in the back seat. He caught Nikki’s eye.

“If you need a chaperone ce soir, I am available,” he mocked.
