9th February

A gentle breeze lifted a tendril of hair that tickled my face. I reached up to push it back, waking Fish from his peaceful slumber in the process.

His long, dark eyelashes fluttered. Turning my body onto my stomach, I watched him as he came to. His eyes opened a slit, and he threw a lazy grin my way, sending tingles down my spine. He really was a masterpiece of beauty, with his long hair spread out behind him. I kissed him lightly on the lips, eliciting another grin from him, and then skipped to the entrance of the cave to rinse the sand from me.

Silently, I scooped up water and rinsed my face, tasting the salt on my lips. Using my fingers, I braided my hair and used a hair tie I kept on my wrist to fasten the end.

The weather had cleared during the night, leaving a fresh morning and cloudless sky. I turned back to Fish to find him reading my mother’s journal.

I stretched my arms and cleared my throat, he didn’t respond.

He continued reading, oblivious to me.

“Morning?”

So much was his absorption in my mother’s words that he didn’t even look up.

I inched my way toward him, observing him as he read with his forehead creased from lifted eyebrows.

“Couldn’t wait to dig into my mom’s diary, huh?” I said, sitting next to him.

He jolted, and the book dropped onto the sand. “How did you sleep?”

“Like a baby.” I winked. “Which one are you reading?”

“There are twenty books here,” he exclaimed, holding one of them up. “Each book has three hundred and sixty-five entries, so I figured we’d better get started.” He sheepishly grinned. “I’m learning so much about your life.”

The corners of my mouth quirked up, but inside I trembled from not knowing what my mother wrote.

“I’m not sure about you reading my mom’s diaries,” I laughed. “Should I worry about you prying into my life with such intensity? My mom could have written anything about me. Even the embarrassing stuff. Actually, knowing her, she totally wrote embarrassing stuff.” I reached for the book in his hand, but he pulled it out of my reach with a grin.

He gave me a side-glance. “I like reading her words, especially when they provide snippets of your young life. I can imagine you as a child getting into these scrapes.”

I rolled my eyes, trying to keep the tone light, but my insides churned at how my whole life was laid out before him with every embarrassing detail written in black and white. If it had been anyone else, I would have insisted on reading the diaries myself, but there was something about him that made opening up to him exciting… and more than a little scary.

“After skimming a couple of the diaries from when you were young, I finally found the first one. The one where your mom explains how she fell in love and how she lost her tail to acquire her legs.”

“It’s all there?” A shiver ran down my spine at the thought of what I was about to discover.
