Chapter 20

We crossed the street to Diggy’s SUV side-by-side.

“What’s a code red?” I asked.

“It means the suspect is to be detained at all costs, no matter where,” he replied.

My heart stuttered. “Detained?”

Diggy shook his head, his brows knitting. “In Vincent’s case, he’s to eliminate the threat, even if he’s in public, in broad daylight.”

“Miss,” someone called just before a hand touched my shoulder.

I turned to see the guy from the DJ booth stepping back. His aura was green—definitely a werewolf—and by the way his eyes lowered when I frowned at him, not a dominant one.

“Uh, I’m Jonas Toth,” he said, looking down at his boots. “From the club?” He pointed a thumb back across the street. He looked to be around my age, maybe a little older, but that meant nothing in terms of years.

“From the DJ booth,” I said, and he glanced up, met my eyes, and nodded. “Yes, that was me.”

“What can we do for you?” Diggy asked, adopting a friendly demeanor I’d never seen from him before—at least not when I was around.

The guy rubbed a hand over his stubbled jaw. “I, um, heard your conversation with Mr. Farkas.” Two dimples appeared as he gave us a sheepish smile. “I didn’t mean to listen, but I had to use the restroom, and I …” He rubbed a nervous hand over his mouth and shook his head. “Can we go back inside? I think I need to tell you something.” He paused, uncertain, then added, “It may be nothing though, and I don’t want to waste your time, so if you’re busy or would like me to come by your office.”

His eyes settled on mine again, and I reached for his fidgeting hand and gave it a reassuring squeeze. “We’ll talk now. Diggy and I have nothing else planned for tonight.”

Back in the club, Bruno let us in and moved away, disappearing somewhere in the back. Farkas was nowhere in sight either.

Jonas led us to a back booth and offered us a drink. After we declined, he sat and resumed fidgeting.

“Jonas, what do you have for us?” Diggy asked in a firm but friendly tone.

Jonas frowned down at the table, moving a finger back and forth over the smooth wood. “Well, this may not be what you were asking about,” he said, indecision coloring his voice.

“Tell us anyway,” Diggy encouraged. “Sometimes, the smallest details make all the difference.”

Jonas nodded. “Yeah, you never know. So, here goes. Late last year, I heard two members of the pack talking …” He looked up, his face flushing a crimson red. “I don’t go around eavesdropping on anyone, Mr. Vemourly. It’s just that being low in the pack means people give me little notice.”

Diggy reassured him with a conspiratorial smile. “I know what you mean. My little brother used to get in trouble for similar reasons. Once, he walked in on a couple and demanded to know why they were jumping on the bed and if he could join them.”

Jonas barked out a startled laugh, his shoulders relaxing.
