Wisps of Quinn’s dark hair disappeared around the tents and huts scattered throughout the canyon. Flickers of moonlight broke through the camouflage canopy above, guiding him in his pursuit of her. The dance, the fire, and her heated glances had left him warm and impulsive.

Quinn broke away from the camp at the inlet of the canyon. The sky opened above in a dizzying kaleidoscope of unfamiliar stars. She took a few steps into the desert and turned to face him.

He stood there, unable to form words because his body pressed him to just act. Her lips parted on the cusp of something, eyes lit with a telling flame. He didn’t rush to her, if for no other reason than to torture them both. When he made no effort to cross the short distance between them, she snapped.

“You know you’re infuriating, right?” she said, crossing her arms.

“Yes. Naturally,” he said, grinning.

She looked defiantly to the sky. “I didn’t want to dance. You made a scene back there. I could have just slipped away, but you charged after me.”

“That’s not why you ran,” he said. “Don’t lie to yourself.”

She glared at him, frowning. “You are just—”

He dared to take a few steps forward, reaching out to grasp her hand. “How long are we going to ignore this, Quinn?” he asked.

One touch, and she was swayed toward him. Her hand settled to rest on his side. The light pressure had every inch of his skin sparking alive with goosebumps, and he wanted desperately to be pressed against all of her.

“I can’t wait anymore,” he said, inching closer still, closing the gap between them until her frame settled against his. He paused for a beat, holding his breath. She felt so good, so right in his arms. But he needed her to make the next move. To prove, not only with her eyes, but also her actions, that this wasn’t just him. Finally, she rose on the tips of her toes, giving him the signal he craved.

They crashed into each other—celestial bodies forever on a collision course. One hand cupped her jaw while the other lifted her higher, finding her thigh to wrap around his waist. He’d have felt it was too much too soon if she hadn’t practically climbed him. Her greedy hands grasped at his torso, mapping it like the world’s most single-minded cartographer. He slanted his mouth against hers again and again, devouring her like he’d always wanted. She tasted like perfection. He broke away, taking a gasping breath against her jawline before kissing down her neck.

“Julian,” she whimpered quietly.

“It was always going to be this way,” he said into her skin, intoxicated by her.

“Yes, it—” And then she grew rigid, pushing against his chest and letting her body slide back down to the ground. She stepped away and he stared at her, flabbergasted that she could pull away. It felt wrong—they couldn’t stop. Her lips looked bruised, her eyes still dark with the same want racing through him.

“I can’t do this,” she said.
