CHAPTER SEVEN

WITH HIS CAP pulled low, Danny walked casually down the alley, boxes in hand. In the gloom he looked just like any other delivery man. He banged the door twice loudly and waited.

‘Quién es?’ came a shout from inside asking who it was.

‘Entrega,’ Danny shouted back, hoping the Spanish the sports shop attendant had told him was actually Spanish for delivery.

‘Ok, ok,’ came a shout and a clunk as a bolt was unlocked.

The door swung open and Ervin stood facing him. Danny handed the boxes forward and Ervin instinctively took them off him. He frowned, looking down in momentary confusion at the lightness of the empty boxes. When he looked up all he saw was Danny’s fist a split-second before it hit him full on between the eyes. Ervin flew back inside, dropping the boxes as he slid down the wall behind him. Bending over him Danny powered a few more punches in for good measure. He gave Ervin a couple of kicks satisfied he was out for the count he turned and closed the fire escape door behind him.

He was in a small square room off a main corridor. To the left lay stairs to the rear of the building, to the right was the bar and drinks cellar on. Chucking Ervin over his shoulder, Danny pushed the drinks cellar door open and carried him in. After tucking him out of sight behind a wall of beer crates, Danny took a gun out and made his way to the stairs. Moving cautiously, he opened the door on the first-floor landing, just far enough to see through. With no sound and nobody in sight he slid inside. A corridor with door either side stretched ahead of him.

Gripping the bolt on the first door, he slid it back and pushed it slowly open. The room was empty. Danny had a bad feeling in the pit of his stomach. Moving fast, he checked the other rooms.

Empty.

Shit, they must have been in the lorry.

Anger growing inside him, he took some deep breaths and went back to the stairs, moving quietly to the next floor. There were changing rooms and toilets off the landing to the right; a room with La Oficina written on it lay on the left. Danny took it to mean office. He put his ear to the door and listened. It was quiet, no talking, but he was sure he could hear someone moving about. With his gun at the ready he pushed the door open. Sweeping his gun across the room he levelled on a target. Elona stood by the window. She jumped, looking terrified at his arrival.

‘Please, please don’t hurt me. I know I’m not supposed to be in here. I’m sorry,’ she cried shaking.

‘Shh, it's ok. I’m not going to hurt you. I just want to know where they took the women from the lorry?’ said Danny, tucking his gun back in his jeans.

‘I don’t know about any women. They force me to work in the club and keep the customers happy.
